386853 2005-09-08 09:05:00 My friend has an Internet Explorer. When he tries to view any page, he gets the "Page cannot be displayed" error. His hosts file is clean, and I don't think he has spyware, What could cause this? tony_young480 (4942)
386854 2005-09-08 09:09:00 all sorts of reasons.

do any other browsers work?

can ANY other program access the net?

how is he connecting to the net, dailup, adsl, satelite??

386855 2005-09-08 09:09:00 Has his firewall blocked IE from accessing the internet? Does IE actually load the homepage or it is stopped before that? Jen (38)
386856 2005-09-08 09:13:00 He doesn't want to switch (cuz he can't access the internet and does not read PC World) He has no firewall installed, and is connected by ADSL but dialup does not seem to work either... :( He can ping his default gateway. tony_young480 (4942)
386857 2005-09-08 09:13:00 No, it doesn't load the homepage either. tony_young480 (4942)

386859 2005-09-08 09:21:00 XP, and he uses webmail. tony_young480 (4942)
386860 2005-09-08 09:22:00 You mean he can ping his modem or his ISP domain name servers? If dialup doesn't work either, I would try to plug a phone in the wall socket and make sure you can get a dial tone to rule out a faulty jack. Also check to make sure the cables are plugged into the correct places.

Has he checked for viruses/spyware etc?

Get him to call his ISP helpdesk to make sure his account hasn't been deactivated.

386862 2005-09-08 09:25:00 He's checked for spyware (nothin'), connectable using dial-up (just can't view web pages), account is active, and cables are fine. What is Xtra's DNS anyway? tony_young480 (4942)
