386665 2005-09-07 09:32:00 The CPU fan is faulty and has to be replaced. I'm taking this opportunity to clean up all the dusty stuff in this case. Took out the heatsink and found that there isn't any signs of 'Thermal paste' on the bottom - it's dry and clean.

Is this fan easily available? And, do l have to apply thermal paste on the bottom plate of the heatsink?

Cheers

386666 2005-09-07 09:38:00 do you charge people for all this work you do for them? Metla (12)
386667 2005-09-07 10:17:00 Good question, Metla.

It all depends. Sometimes I get a bottle of wine and at times, a big "THANKYOU" :D

Too kind by far

What fan is it you are looking for? Any standard fan of the right size and voltage should do, there's nothing special bout the Intel labled ones, although I'd tend to choose a quiet one myself .

386669 2005-09-07 10:52:00 Murray P, it's a P4 cpu heatsink and fan. Can I just change the fan itself, or have to replace the complete assembly, i.e. heatsink and fan? I notice that the fan is quite unique and I may not be able to get a replacement?

What about the 'thermal paste' ? Do I need to apply some?

Cheers

386670 2005-09-07 12:13:00 P4 fans/heatsinks are readily available.

And yes, you should apply some thermal paste. Not too much though, just a thin layer is all that is needed.

If the CPU is a Prescott then I recommend one of these:

Pricey I know but keeps the CPU nice and cool. And it comes with a tube of thermal paste. :-)
