| 387347 | 2005-09-10 15:38:00 | Ok a mate of mine has come to me wanting a copy of Windows XP. She has been using an illegal copy of Windows 2000 for the last year or so. Apparently the Win2K install crapped out after a visit to the Windows Update site. I can only assume that the MS Windows authetication software has rendered here copy useless... I could be wrong... I thought all it did was prevent the user from using the Windows Update site. Anyways... she now wants to go the straight and narrow in terms of a new and legal OS purchase and wants Windows XP. Now the problem here for me is that she has budget constraints. I do not expect here to fork out on the upside of $500 for an upgrade version or $700 for a full version of the Windows XP OS. All the suppliers I use require the purchase of at least a mobo, CPU and RAM to get Windows XP at the OEM price. Does anyone know where I can buy the OEM version of Windows XP Home or even Pro if it's under $250 without having to buy a significant amount of hardware to go with it? cheers chiefnz |

For instance, I got Microsoft Office 2003 Win XP for a little over $100.00. Made my computer guy a little pissed, as he was going to charge me a lot more. Microsoft makes an ungodly profit on their software, so there's a lot of wiggle room on what YOU pay. |

Shop around and see who has the best OEM XP price and ask what is the minimum hardware purchase is required to get the OEM version from them. |

| 387354 | 2005-09-11 05:48:00 | Tut tut . You are all naughty . This from MSs OEM System Builder FAQ: If it is an OEM Microsoft Desktop Operating System (such as Windows XP Pro or Windows XP Home), then that can be sold with specific individual hardware components . "If the individual software license is a desktop operating system (including Windows XP Media Center Edition), we grant you a nonexclusive right to distribute individual software licenses; provided that each one is distributed with either (a) a fully assembled computer system or (b) a nonperipheral computer hardware component . . . A "nonperipheral computer hardware component" means a component that will be an integral part of the fully assembled computer system on which the individual software license will be installed . . " So, an OEM Microsoft Desktop Operating System license (such as Windows XP Pro or Windows XP Home) can be sold with a hard drive, motherboard, CPU, memory, if that hardware component is being used in the computer that the Desktop Operating System software is being installed . A cable or mouse for instance is not counted . |
