W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Should I add more sources to the file,

Or is there a corrupt file on the server

Any help would be greatly appreciated

387316 2005-09-10 07:48:00 There was an announcement that non-us is being phased out and it looks as though they have done that already for sid. The have been shifted to the regular section.

see here (lists.debian.org) for the other error in there.

387317 2005-09-10 10:56:00 Thanks

I also read about non-us being phased out, but I thought that was in the future

what would be the correct repository i should add to my sources list, (I'm not in linux right now) as i couldn't find a local sid repositry, (I am sure there was one at ihug or debian.co.nz ) sorry the names and numbers confuse me, sarge, woody, sid, 3.1 confuse the hell out of me, i'll have another read of the debian website

387318 2005-09-10 11:13:00 local debian mirrors (debian.co.nz)

read the man page for sources.list

the basic form is this:

deb linux.citylink.co.nz unstable main non-free contrib

after the http:// link is the distro name and then the major areas you are after i.e. main non-free and contrib

sarge (3.1) is the latest "stable" release it succeeds woody (3.0)
etch is the latest "testing" release (it will in the future be the "stable" release)
sid is the name for the "unstable" release i.e. the bleeding edge - it is always named sid.

most people would use sarge for running servers since it is backed by the Debian Security team (and possibly use updated packages for stuff they use).

Debian desktop users would tend to use testing or sid, if they really want the latest and greatest (at the risk of issues). Don't worry about the name of "unstable" it isn't a daily disaster or the like, but you can run into problems.

387319 2005-09-11 01:57:00 Ok I have got it all working,

Quick question, when i have installed the program using apt-get, should it appear in the menus or not?

387320 2005-09-11 02:07:00 Quick question, when i have installed the program using apt-get, should it appear in the menus or not?In my experiance, generally yes, but not allways :D personthingy (1670)
387321 2005-09-11 02:41:00 So that's what happens when you try to import munitions from the US?:D Did you have the SIS (and some extras with American accents) knocking your door down five minutes later? Graham L (2)
387322 2005-09-11 02:52:00 Quick question...How does one change the source of the files apt-get picks up? personthingy (1670)
387323 2005-09-11 10:14:00 Moo

When i run apt-get, it likes to get files from ftp://ftp.us.debian.org

How do i change this so apt-get gets its files from a local mirror?

387324 2005-09-11 21:24:00 edit your sources file

/etc/apt/sources.list

and add the local repositry and comment out the other one (if you don't want to use it)

I've given up on linspire and gone to mepis (but am having a few problems with that too)
