387357 2005-09-11 07:14:00 There is no point in buying Windows XP these days. Especially with a new OS coming out sometime next year. Microsoft won't mind loosing another $500NZD. Just download from one of the million warez sites like any body in their right mind that hasn't got money to burn.

(Not saying that I'm running an illegal Windows >.<)

The whole reason this thread was posted was because an illegal copy of Windows was installed on a computer. Having said that your post is completely out of place. When MS was pimping XP before, during and after its release, many people didn't go out and upgrade to XP. The same will apply to Windows Vista, most computer users will wait before they go out and buy a new OS... I for one normally wait a few months before upgrading my OS especially if the current one installed isn't causing too many headaches. I used an illegal copy of Windows but too many crashes etc led me to purchase a legit copy. I think you will find that when Windows Vista comes out, the uptake will be slow... besides there hasn't been any real confirmation as to what sort of hardware Vista will run on but rumour has it that you will need quite a beast of a machine simply to browse the web.

387359 2005-09-15 23:49:00 Well I've had a look at the "faulty" machine and it turns out that she's actually running Windows XP Pro, her ex boyfriend installed it for her. I went to the Windows Update site to see what the message was and sure enough it said that the copy of XP was not a legit one and that the Windows Update would not allow me to download any updates at all.... BUT heres the funny bit, I stepped away from the PC for a while and when I got back there was an icon in the system tray saying that Windows was downloading updates. I let this continue and sure enough after about 10 minutes the icon then came up with a pop up box saying that new updates have been downloaded and are ready to install. I then proceeded to install the updates and restarted the machine... it runs likea dream with no problems at all.

Now I fail to see the point of MS's Windows authentication process on the Windows Update site if the OS can download the update using the auto update feature that comes with SP2. Sort of nullifies the whole thing I think.

Of course the other side of the coin is that there is too much risk in making all the illegal copies of Windows XP unable to download updates.... especially the security ones.... it would be a disaster really.

Just thought you guys may want to know this as a piece of useless information.

cheers

387360 2005-09-16 06:25:00 I'm confused....

Whats the difference between an oem copy of xp that your quoting as costing $500-$700 to my copy of xp home (full version, not an upgrade version) that i brought from my local computer shop for $160+gst?.

Does it contain Microsoft Office and other windows programs as well that i would have to buy seperately.?

Just curious.

387361 2005-09-17 00:10:00 I have a dealer account with qmb computers, they are advertising package with Microsoft Windows XP Home(oem), a cd-r and a mouse for $134 which is pretty good deal. STi (8857)

He dosen't say that.

"Anyways... she now wants to go the straight and narrow in terms of a new and legal OS purchase and wants Windows XP. Now the problem here for me is that she has budget constraints. I do not expect here to fork out on the upside of $500 for an upgrade version or $700 for a full version of the Windows XP OS."

He's talking about the prices of the upgrade version and full version not the OEM version.
