388204 2005-09-13 12:02:00 Trying to instal an Epson Stylus color 440 onto HP Pavilion 564a running win xp home. Selected printer from instal list & it shows up on control panel/ printers but won't print test page except for one or two passes of the print carriage every 5 minutes. Printer does not show up on device manager, hardware installed list. Printer job list shows test page waiting to print but won't let me delete it. Have tried uninstalling & reinstalling printer 3 X still no luck. Any ideas? Peter M (852)
388205 2005-09-13 13:14:00 Certainly seems like a friver problem, USB printers especially, can be very fussy about installation. Do Epson have a driver cleaner? Might need to look on their site.

Have look at item 15 at Sakefoot's (snakefoot.fateback.com), re printer drivers, spooler and processor. There are some links to MS that might be useful too.

388206 2005-09-14 03:15:00 Try shutting down and restarting. That should give you the opportunity to retry or cancel the test page. I think I'd cancel, and start from scratch.

Did the OS detect the printer, and know what it is? If not, perhaps your printer port is set for "traditional", rather than EPP or ECP. The Epson probably needs a bidirectional port.

Shut down again, and have a look at the BIOS. After checking that, you could try the printer again. If it works this time round, leave well alone. ;)

If it doesn't work, delete it from the Printers page. Shut down, again, and restart. The OS should offer to install it. Let it. And it should work.

I am assuming the the printer does work.

388207 2005-09-14 07:01:00 Yes I have tried deleting the printer & reinstalling it several times. Also have tried turning off PC & restarting all to no avail. No, the OS does not detect the printer when it starts up. I have to manually instal it each time.
Graham L yes the printer works fine on my other PC running Win 98. Will check out Bios & Murray's Sakefoot site and get back to you later. Thanks.

388208 2005-09-14 12:31:00 Ok, further update. Have checked Bios & can't see any reference to printers, traditional, EPP or ECP. So came out of there and tried deleting printer again & all references to it in registry as per item 15 at Sakefoot's site. Tried reinstalling again and got same result. PC will not see and install printer for me. Says it can't find any new P&P devices. Peter M (852)
388209 2005-09-14 13:14:00 ECP, EEP should be listed under ports, which could be listed under Advanced Chipset Features or some such.

Download fresh drivers (are there any updates/bug fixes). Did you look for a driver cleaner (it could be on the CD or at the website).

I had to do a couple of rounds of the Snakefoot fix to fix a similar issue with a Canon printer.

I presume it's a USB printer? Try it in a different port(s), look for problems in Device Manager related to the USB host and ports (if it ain't communicatiing, it won't install fully). Have a look at USB Man (http://www.usbman.com/), most of the links are on the left.

388210 2005-09-14 13:35:00 Thanks Murray but it is not a USB printer it is serial connector on LPT1. Epson website says they have no driver for this printer to run with XP except the one that comes with Win XP. Peter M (852)

You will need to set up an account to download the driver, but its free, and they don't spam you :)

388212 2005-09-15 13:38:00 Thanks Tazz, tried a couple of drivers from driverguide.com and still no go. They did say on their forum that if the xp installed driver doesn't work then change the bios settings for EPP etc. like Graham L suggested. I have found the Bios I/O settings but it won't allow any changes to be made. How do I get access to change the setting? Also, does anyone know why my pc will not detect the printer automatically or even when I manually select - detect new hardware - it says it can't find any. Peter M (852)
388213 2005-09-16 03:43:00 The Printer might not be detected because its port is not bidirectional. So it can't say who it is.

Is the BIOS password protected?
