388124 2005-09-13 04:16:00 I suspect I’ve been sent a little Virus but aren’t sure, so I’m looking for suggestions as to how best approach the problem.

The position is this:

I’ve received an E-Mail from a chap “by the same name” but with a address of @usa.net
Attached is a 12.5k zip file.
All the message says is “price”.

Ok, I know what your all thinking and I’m sure your right but:

I’m expecting some prices by E-Mail. (yes, the sender was hoping I was)
It has got past Xtra’s virus scan.
Mine (AVG) hasn’t gone mad, mind you I haven’t unzipped it.

So, the question is: How can one handle and check one of these files with relative safety?

Something like unzipping to a floppy and scanning that???
Forwarding to a Hot Mail account and opening it there. Hmm, maybe not possible being a .zip?

Anyway, what’s your thoughts?

388125 2005-09-13 04:31:00 hotmail av scanner aint perfect and I've seen it miss viruses before..........open the email and 'save as' the zip to your desktop or somewhere easy to access .......then RIGHT clik it ONE time and 'scan with avg' from the popup menu.....if it says........SAFE then you can assume it's probably safe but yep forward it to hotmail as well then you'll have a second opinion...... drcspy (146)
388126 2005-09-13 04:32:00 DONT unzip till you've scanned it drcspy (146)
388127 2005-09-13 04:41:00 Surely, its safe enough to unzip it, and view it (inside WinZip). It is just data to Winzip (virus or not). The viewer doesn't just displays the characters in it, without trying to execute anything, doesn't it?

But why bother? Is the sender someone you expected to send you the "price information". If not, just dump it.

388128 2005-09-13 05:10:00 not everyone has winzip and if they've only got the xp 'extract' process available then it's not safe at all....... drcspy (146)
388129 2005-09-13 05:19:00 If you have a Yahoo or Gmail address, send it to that address (or all if you have them). See if their virus scanners pick it up.

I expect Yahoo/Gmail scanners to be much more comprehensive and up-to-date that your home scanner or even Xtra's scanners. Nothing (malware) gets past the Yahoo and Gmail scanners as far as I can remember.
