Want to keep my desktop clear if possible.

Also when you click start, those items in Start Menu - are they slowing down the system?

Or can you point out a site which might clarify the issue.
As far as I can see they all practically do the same job at making it easier to start up a program faster - so why have so many ways to do it?

388484 2005-09-15 03:19:00 I think you mean programs which load automatically when Windows loads, and are often indicated by having their icons in the systray next to the clock?

Yes, the more unnecessary programs you have loading during startup, the more resources are unnecessarily tied up. The programs can be launched manually when required.

Best way of dealing with these programs is to look for an option within the program itself to disable loading/starting when Windows starts. Failing that option you can use msconfig (start > run. Enter in msconfig) and look at the startup list. Search for items using this (www.sysinfo.org) as a guide to whether they are needed at startup or not.

Spybot Search & Destroy also has the option of managing the startup list under its Advanced features.

Having a tonne of icons on your desktop can hamper desktop loading sometimes I believe. You can tidy them up into one folder on the desktop or remove the ones you don't really need. I don't know how having a lot of quicklaunch icons affects the system, but again remove the ones you don't really need if you like.

388485 2005-09-15 03:23:00 On a modern machine there should be no performance hit from desktop icons or simple entries in the Windows Menu.

You can see it on the old old old girls, where after clicking start it would take a minute to get going, then another 2 minutes to display the list.

Or with desktop icons you could sometimes improve boot time by a couple of minutes by removing the 100 odd desktop icons.

But no benifit on comps made in the last 8 or so years....

388486 2005-09-15 03:35:00 I think you mean programs which load automatically when Windows loads, and are often indicated by having their icons in the systray next to the clock?Reading your post again, I see you didn't mean this. :) However, if you are worried about having unnecessary programs loading automatically in the background this is one area you can look at.

Most programs will add shortcuts to the desktop (and quick launch sometimes), but feel free to delete them and just access the program via your start menu. I guess the programmers just like to make it easy to launch their program by adding extra shortcuts all over the place.
