| 388297 | 2005-09-14 04:03:00 | I bought a new modem from Dick Smith yesterday (external serial V92) knowing that we don't use that V92 protocol in NZ but assumed that it would still be compatible and run under the V90 environment ... but when I connected it it was hellishly slow. Long story short ... my ISP's help desk told me I have to tell it to run in V90 mode and in Win XP need to go control panel/phones and modems/modem/properties/advanced and insert a string < +ms=v34 >. After I hung up though I thought about it and wondered if the string should have 'V90' at the end rather than 'V34'? Tell me someone. Oh, the reason I'm asking here instead of going back to the helpdesk is that I don't have time to spend another 10 minutes on hold. (Apart from that they were excellent) |

| 388298 | 2005-09-14 04:24:00 | The tech was probably "making sure". "V90" is an option the modem should accept, and will probably work, depending on your line quality. "V34" will restrict it to 33.6 kbps, but it's almost certain to work. Dick Smith gear usually has a manual (a copy will be on any disk you got with it). Cutting you back to V.34 speeds while giving you the impression that they were giving you the V.90 setting isn't excellent service. |

My old modem was humming along nicely albeit at 33.6kb (nominally) but the new one plugged in 10 minutes later struggled along like someone running through waist deep syrup. Plugging the old one back in later returned the speeds to normal. Anyhoo ... am I correct in thinking I can amend that string to V90 instead of V34? |

It seems that the modems are set up with the Country Code = Austria. This probably isn't causing your speed problem, but it's worth fixing. Go to dse.co.nz and search for xh1142, then click on the picture (or on the catalogue number) to get their "more" page. Go to the bottom. As well as the link to the Suppport Page (which has the manual, and the AT codes etc) there is, right at the bottom, a link to changing the country code. | Graham L (2) | ||

Thanks for looking at that for me. I'll make that change tonight as well so it doesn't think it's in the alps anymore. As for their documentation ... I wish they'd sent a magnifying glass with it. Tiniest print I've ever seen in a manual ... and that includes the fine print from other manuals! |
