388287 2005-09-14 03:33:00 I live in a rural district 3km from a modern exchange which I understand has broadband capability. I am told by telecom that I can get broadband but it requires "the full installation" costing $400.
Xtra say that its stability can not be guaranteed.
I am thinking of asking Xtra to put it in for free (with their current offer ) on the basis that it costs me nothing to try. However will this mean I will only get say 50kbs insteead of the 5kbs I get with dial up

388289 2005-09-14 05:07:00 And to make matters worse, I'd strongly suspect that a "free" installation offer from Xtra would apply only to installations which can be done at a keyboard. If Telecom want $400 to do a "full installation", someone would have to get in a truck and do something. Graham L (2)
388290 2005-09-14 10:01:00 They had to get in a truck to get my Jetstream going. Didn't cost me any more! berryb (99)
388291 2005-09-14 10:09:00 The terms and conditions of that offer state: Offer applies to Xtra Broadband Single PC Self-Install Kit worth $99.95 and Telecom's broadband connection only charge worth $99..

I would phone and ask them what deal they would offer if a customer requires a full installation to be done.

388292 2005-09-14 10:57:00 Many moons ago, I had a new line put in by Telecom (actually their subcontractor) while they had a free installation promotion going. I made sure I explained very carefully to them what the building was like, how far within the building the line need to travel and potential obstacles.

Lo and behold, when the contractor showed up he absolutely refude to run the line 20 odd metres, through 350+mm walls and 500mm beams (all concrete) and no hot glue as it was all exposed.

Can't quiet remember how long it took to persuade Telecom to honour their promotion, was several days anyway. Once Telecom rolled over, the contractor was very happy to come back for half a day to drill holes, run conduite and cable and hook up the phone. Did a beautiful job too, real work of art. Of course he got paid and I only had the cost of some extra long extension cable from DSE.

The moral of the story is to look at the fine print for limitations. If all looks good from your perspective, go for it, stick to your guns and have some fun.

388293 2005-09-14 17:14:00 This happy camper phones up Telecom yesterday to enquire if I could benefit from their special adsl deal of free modem (politely advised them no thanks) and free connection (yes please) if I order it now for our new house, but only want it after we move in next month . (the ad says order before 25th Sept or something like that) .

So lady #1 says, bugger orf, you ain't getting no free connection . I say well what if my missus calls to get it? Lady #1 says bugger orf, we know where you're calling from and you ain't getting no steenken free connection .

I say, but you don't know who my missus is and you don't know what address we're moving to, so why can't I get the free connection?

Lady #1 transfers me to some other dept (new connections or some such thing) .

Lady #2 says, Yes indeedy Mr x, we'll gladly give you a free modem (again politely declined) and a free connection . And what's more, we'll have it up and running within 3 (yes three) days after you move in .

Sometimes you just gotta love Telecom! :)
