ok about two weeks ago my hard drive crashed . I went and brought a new one . I followed the insructions and i installed it myself . after installing from the cd that came with it, I restarted my computer and i get this message "NTLDR is missing" I have not a clue what to do now . I have a dell 2300 windows xp home edition . it came with 27 GB hard drive and my new one is 160GB but when installing it said it could only do 137GB which was fine by me . I would just bring it into a shop and have someone do it for me but my dad wont pay for it so i am stucking doing it myself . I have installed graphic cards and such first hard drive and what a pain

Two weeks without a computer. Shock, horror. :D

You used the Dell CD and it installed the OS. Did it ever work? That is, after the installation it would have shut down and rebooted. Did that work, or did it actually function normally for a while ?

Anyway, the simplest fix should be to put in that CD again, and boot to it. It should give you a number of choices of what to do. There's probably a "Repair" option, but I think I'd be inclined to tell it to reinstall, starting with partitioning and formatting the disk. ;) It might be a good idea to have a look in the BIOS setup for any special settings which protect the boot sector, but I guess that the installation would have failed with lots of error messages if it had found something like that.

388260 2005-09-14 05:58:00 From what I've seen you never get the recovery CDs anymore with the brand PCS - they put it on a partition of the hard drive. WHich of course, is now gone.
SO how are you reinstalling??? Where did you get the windows CD?
Also you will most likely need a BIOS update to use the full size of the HDD> So you will need to find out exactly what motherboard is in it.
If you don't have the recovery CDs you could contact Dell for a set.
Tell your Dad to stop using false economy - this could end up costing him more than it would have to just get a tech to sort it.
