388564 2005-09-15 11:44:00 When i try to run the Disk defragmenter(XP),it either takes ages or hangs. My 40 GB HDD is 26 GB used up. I want to know how often do i need to run this pain, is it a big deal if i dont ever? dannytan (8892)
388565 2005-09-15 11:48:00 Are u running it in safe mode? If not boot into safe mode and chkdsk, after that run the defragger. If you never defrag, its bound to take long. Its good to run it regularly and also a disk clean up bfore that wont hurt either.
If you dont ever? well, its best not to wait until the drive gets fragmented badly and u end up with related problems such as sluggishness and boot issues etc. if its a pain, you an go in for an automatic defragmenter that can be set to do the task.

388566 2005-09-17 09:42:00 Defragging the hard drive is as essential as breathing, insuring your car,
or even remembering to put water in the radiator.

It takes ages esp if you load and unload a lot of data or programmes.

it also hangs if you have it online, have an antivirus programme running or have a screen saver turned on.

Turn them all off.

Now try

388567 2005-09-17 17:50:00 Thnx for the replies,
Otter: i ran diskcleanup and defragmented in safe mode, this time although
it did take hours the stuff actually completed its job without hanging mid-air...phew!
Ojos:Guess i will defrag more often now, its better to spend a few minutes
everyweek rather than hours on end later i guess. Or maybe its not a bad
idea to look at some tool that may work faster.
By automatic do you mean something like Diskeeper?

Well I think its overrated. Just for the hell of it I did mine this morning. First time since I built this PC in January. Hardly any problem at all, took 10 minutes. (120GB - 2 partitions).
What I find the biggest problem for slowing your PC is the rubbish XP puts everywhere, all the reg stuff, and its nasty hidden duplicates of everything you view.
Cleaning all that out makes a big difference.

How do you clean out the reg stuff and the hidden duplicates?

How do you clean out the reg stuff and the hidden duplicates?
1. Open Regedit
2. Select HKEY_CURRENT_USER (entire root branch)
3. Export to file CU.reg (put somewhere safe)
4. Reboot to DOS.
5. Navigate 'Documents and Settings\ME' folder (or whatever your active profile name is)
6. Copy NTUSER.DAT to a safe place
7. Navigate 'Documents and Settings\Default User' folder
8. Copy NTUSER.DAT to 'Documents and Settings\ME' folder, overwriting old file (237 KB).
9. Reboot XP
10. Ignore the default desktop, and program errors or defaulted options.
11. Open Regedit
12. Import CR.reg (ignore the error message)
13. Reboot XP
14. Tidy up desktop icons (close the welcome to XP popup).

That's all. Everything else should be OK.
If anything is terribly wrong (shouldn't be), then you can always restore you original NTUSER.DAT in DOS again.

You can also download the MS 'Hive Cleanup' utility service which does seem to help speed up logins (esp if you've been running XP for a while). Only make active when needed.

'Clear Streams.reg' fix (use at you own risk). Run immediately before doing the above steps - you'll notice that your CU.reg dump file will be a quarter of the size :)

388571 2005-09-18 08:37:00 Regularly, once a week I check as to whether I need a defrag and just as regularly for at least two months I have been told no you do not need to defrag.
I run Windows Xp, and know that when I was on Windows Millenium that I was forever defragging. Presume that XP is more efficient ...but it does seem peculiar !

Yes thats one of the automatic defraggers available.

I guess noone can tell another how often to defrag, there are people who run it daily or one a week or once in few months or sometimes in years!
As pctek said, true, a registry cleaner will help clear out stuff, i do my maintenance regularly, however i consider defrag also as a part of the routine, atleast everytime you add or remove a lot of files or large files, it would be good to defrag. So many temporary files get created even while browsing, its good to also run disk cleanup once in a while, clean out the junk and defrag after that. I feel all these contribute to good system speed and boot.
