388759 2005-09-16 12:52:00 Just a heads up to others.

So I downloaded iTunes 5 as soon as I found out it was released last week. To me its a standard program and nothing about it worried me, but today I realised its installed bonjour (www.apple.com) "without my permission" (in quotes because I was unaware while installing although it was probably written "somewhere", just not in big flashing letters). I mainly hate this because I wasn't well informed, but also because I don't even need the functionality it "helpfully provides" :/

Bonjour has something to with networking, and makes several changes to your system, including something to do with winsock which is apparently not a nice thing. I've considered uninstalling it, but I use QT7 regularly, and its function cant be replaced with QTAlt. With the news of numerous problems with iTunes 5 (news.google.co.nz), I hope iTunes doesn't become a media player to avoid.

388760 2005-09-16 20:04:00 Yup, I noticed Itunes 5 installed this last week too, when I installed it .

The firewall window popped up and asked for access .

I just removed/uninstalled Itunes and kept QT .

And removed Bonjour's access from the firewall .

Since I use Winamp and the Ipod plugin . . .

These 2 are smaller than Itunes, and neither need to run on bootup, like Itunes .

How do you do this?

Thanks, Sal, for the warning - much appreciated !

I updated iTunes not too long ago so was a bit worried . Have just checked and still have v4 .
Phew !

388763 2005-09-16 23:40:00 I went to Add/remove programs, and uninstalled Itunes .

QT will remain in Add/remove programs .

Itunes must install both and also put both QT and Itunes, in Add/remove programs .

388764 2005-09-16 23:52:00 Does your add/remove programs say how big the QT install is?

When I tried the iTunes infestation QT showed up in the with an install of some fairy logic of 0.1kb (or similar)....

Dodgy.

388765 2005-09-17 03:59:00 Unless it is causing problems with your system, there is really no reason to remove Bonjour (formerly known as Rendezvous). All it does is provide a zero configuration protocol that applications such as iTunes can use to talk to each other. If you have a network and uninstall Bonjour, you will not be able to listen to music on another computer using iTunes. :) maccrazy (6741)

Dodgy .

Yup mine shows 62 . 89 MB for QT .

Umm yeah not worried about removing Itunes .

Its too big and there's nothing in it, I use .

So, no point in having it installed, in the first place .

I don't use Podcasting, or buy MP3's . Winamp and the Ipod plugin work just as good .

Thats poor logic, There is no reason for a Media player to install a networking app or alter any networking configurations.Probally get fired for it in an office. Nor would anyone in their right mind be happy about an app they didnt ask for reaching out over a network to look for files.

Might as well download a Trojan horse and be done with it.

Apart from the fact you know full well it isn't a trojan horse. ;) Bonjour is built into Mac OS X but for Windows it has to be installed separately or features would have to be cut out of the Windows version of iTunes. It is true that you should exercise caution when installing applications that install extra network features etc but when you know exactly what it does and you know it comes from a reputable company with a good track record for security there isn't that much to stress about. If there were security issues then Mac users would have a big problem and from memory it is Windows users who have the problems. :D
