389019 2005-09-18 08:44:00 I don't have Update on auto and I would doubt that any QOS setting has any effect on my day to day surfing.
Image this situation as income tax. Every month when you receive an amount of money, part of your income will be subjected to tax. Link this idea to QoS bandwidth reservation. Even though the government might not the money, your income is still subjected to tax every month, which means your "spendable" money is still some percentage less than the amount you receive before tax. By removing tax (removing QoS bandwidth reservation), you get to spend more money (and therefore, you get to have more bandwidth usage). I guess my theory is right?

Cheers :)

It is a cheaper form of Internet connection compare to its friends.

No I don't think that theory is right because QOS isn't like a tax. I think it's more like a bus lane that cars can use until there's a bus coming through.

I suspect some of the problems may occur because people have more than just a browser using the connection. Try turning off the messaging etc. I use FF with Adblock. Pages load fairly quickly when you don't have to wait for several adservers to respond.

389022 2005-09-19 02:11:00 Just to go back to the original question.

I had a noisy rural line.

I contacted Telecom and they said they'd check it but if it wasn't in their domain it'd cost me $81.00. So I checked all I could and then got back to them and they relaced a network card in a box down the road at no cost to me and it doubled internet speed.

Tested at www.radiomods.co.nz/modemtestpage.html

389025 2005-09-19 05:49:00 I have just followed the advice and removed Qos Packet schedular. I think there is a slight improvement so now its not incredibly slow just pathetic. Waiting to reply to one of the threads took nearly 5 minutes before I gave up. This reply took about 30 secs to come up - it used to be virtually instantaneous. Now I have noticed my dial up has got this slow ever since XTRA started their recent big advertising campaign for Broadband. Gosh I have a nasty suspicous mind.

If you can, try booting up a Linux LiveCD. If there is a significant speed difference between browsing using Linux and Windows, then is a software issue. If there is no significant speed difference, then it's either a hardware or line issue.
