389008 2005-09-17 12:49:00 I run a caching DNS server, which speeds things up so-so. I also configure my system and firewall not to talk to any outside services unless I specifically ask it to. vinref (6194)

Do you mean FreshUI? To tweak your system's settings, expand "Windows System", then "Network Settings" and look for the option "Manage the reserved QoS bandwidth".

Cheers :)

389011 2005-09-17 21:21:00 Proximitron is a freebie filter that will certainly speed things up.
And its endorsed by Metla, so it must be good!

Do a Google for the download.

389012 2005-09-18 00:21:00 Disabling QOS certainly speeds things up for the average page download where you are not throuttled by ISP. I also used an early Proximitron and liked it.

"If the program that reserved the bandwidth is not sending sufficient data to use it, the unused part of the reserved bandwidth is available for other data flows on the same host."

So if Windows Update isn't actually downloading where is the speed increase going to come from?

389014 2005-09-18 02:52:00 As I said:

"I could never understand why on the very same hardware Win98SE was so much faster than Win2K until I came across this fix elsewhere and then later saw that people on PressF1 knew about it too."

I perserved with this problem for months, it is important to understand that my system is dual boot so all hardware is the same for both os's. I could not tolerate that the "wonderful" Win2k would not d/l faster than crappy Win98SE, then I found out about QoS. This fixed the problem. I did many checks and it was not that the computer was also d/ling other things at the same time as the desired d/l it was just that not all the bandwidth seemed available to be used, it was always slower for a given file size.

PaulD, not sure about your post above but MS has said things before that on closer inspection are found not to be so, not deliberate just an oversight.

389016 2005-09-18 03:59:00 That was MS's response to all the claims that XP was permanently setting aside bandwidth.

I don't have Update on auto and I would doubt that any QOS setting has any effect on my day to day surfing.
