388861 2005-09-16 12:58:00 i currently have an AMD 2600, with 512mb of RAM and a 9600 xt 128mb. When I play Counter-Strike source I'm lucky to get an FPS above 25fps... I was wondering if it is worth buying another 512mb, does anyone think I'd get much of an increase of FPS? because i dont wanna waste $99 on another 512, as all other programs run okay as is... 388862 2005-09-16 13:11:00 I'll be honest and say likely no

Try things like different drivers, removing un-needed apps that might be chewing CPU, just standard performance improvments :)

388863 2005-09-16 13:15:00 close down any unneed processes, update your drivers and i will recommend getting the omega drivers, they are enhanced drivers Prescott (11)
388864 2005-09-16 20:42:00 What driver version are you using?

The latest Radeon drivers from ATi are version 5.8

I would recommend any one of the following sets of drivers

1) ATi Catalys 5.8 (support.ati.com) This is the original driver from ATi. Just choose your OS, type of card etc and also I recommend using the Control Panel version of Catalyst not the Control Centre version.

2) Omega Radeon Tweaked drivers (http://www.omegadrivers.net/) This is a tweaked version of the ATi Catalyst Driver, they've just released a new set based on the Catalyst 5.8 driver.

3) NGO Optimized drivers (www.ngohq.com) These are optimized drivers from NGO, I am currently using these and I saw an immediate increase in performance from the standard drivers offered by ATi. I would give these a try...

I suggest you use the CONTROL PANEL version of these drivers NOT the CATALYST CONTROL CENTRE version, there are some issues with the CATALYST CONTROL CENTRE.

Hope that helps.

388865 2005-09-16 21:03:00 Shouldn't be a problem for CounterStrike but having more ram can make a big difference to some of the newer games.
A point - I tried the Omega drivers and the poreformance was slightly better but it totally screwed up my system - I suddenly had a bunch of persistent UNKOWN devices all over device manager. So I dumped it and went back to the normal ones.

388866 2005-09-16 22:32:00 I decided to try the NGO drivers. But how the hell do you download them???
I've been trying for two hours.
Get to the bit where it says "download should start in a few seconds". After several attempts and a wait of more than a few seconds, I'm still waiting.

388867 2005-09-16 22:47:00 What browser are you using? Have you got a pop-up blocker?

Also check that Active X is enable, your browser may be set to block Active X functions. There should be a secondary link if the primary download function doesn't work, try clicking that.

cheers

So just click the bit that usually says if it doesn't start click here.

You will not get a increase in FPS from more ram at all (not possible). FPS is a result of CPU and Video card GPU speed. BUT if you have to little ram for a game you will get stutters. Many of the current games like BF2, Doom3 cause annoying stutters as they access the HDD with pageing. So you will get a consistant maximun FPS on more ram with many high end games.

388870 2005-09-17 06:05:00 okay, cool thanks for the advice. I'll try the drivers, as mine are a little dated, and I should also get to cleaning my system up a bit, as there's heaps running and i think most of it is due to spyware and probably a virus or 30, haha I've been lazy over the past 4 months to maintain my system.... :D bizzack (7739)
