| 389707 | 2005-09-20 16:46:00 | Hi Guys(& any Gals).I am looking to build a new machine myself.I have selected a Gigabyte K8NSC-939 mobo and an Athlon64 3000+cpu to start with,any comments on this combo welcome(especially from you Metla as I find your input extremely helpful from other postings).Also, any suggestions on suitable graphics card,I am not a gamer(yet)but I would like to use this machine for digital photos(amature only)as well as editing Digital video.Cheers in advance for help. :) | B B (6979) | ||
| 389708 | 2005-09-20 20:30:00 | You could have read of Mejobloggs thread 'Sorting out a new PC' in the chat forum yesterday... pretty much what you're thinking of building. | Shortcircuit (1666) | ||
| 389709 | 2005-09-20 20:31:00 | PS, I just built one with the same m/board & CPU a few weeks ago... goes great :D | Shortcircuit (1666) | ||
| 389710 | 2005-09-20 21:04:00 | Seems an ok combo to me. For a graphics card don't get anything less than a 6600GT. What exact model all depends on your budget... |

You won't notice a huge amount of difference between the one you have and the one you are proposing to build with those specs and would hardly be worth it if you are not passing the current one on to other family members. | FoxyMX (5) | ||

I have it clocked to 2.6gig (800mhz) overclock which is above the performance of a A64 3800+ and bechmarks gerneraly put it above Pentium 4 gig (if they actually released it). Good choice in platform, budget setup but runs like like snot (in a good way). BTW Idleing temp is 26C and under stress about 35-38C, I expect that to jump up in summer but good temps for standard AMD air cooling fan. |

| 389714 | 2005-09-21 22:06:00 | My setup is the same as STi's (see his sig) except I have a lower spec video card - mine is an nVidia GeForce 6200. I am not a gamer, and this is more than adequate for my needs. Editing digital photos is as intense as it gets around here. The combo of that motherboard, cpu and RAM is great. |

One can easily pay $250+ for a motherbaord that is Nforce4 PCIE, SLI etc . I have decided the "true real life" benefits of dual core is some time off . I doubt we will see any games written with true dual core ability for at least a year or so . As for apllications, I can wait an extra . 00005 seconds for excel to start up "same as the useless HT argument" . Dual core is already showing its king in synthetic benchmarks and it clearly the future, but its going to take some time for the applications to catch up and even longer for the high end games (1 year is probably optimistic) . Its all about strategic upgrading . But I must admit I would probably have gone for a board with PCIE if I was buying a new video card as well . |
