389645 2005-09-21 09:20:00 IF money is tight either go for a Geforce FX 5200 or FX 5500 see the Gigabyte FX 5500 in most popular section in this link. www.ascent.co.nz Don't worry about the 8x AGP bit. I'm running an 8x AGP card on a 4x AGP mother board. The differance in speed is unnoticeable to the naked eye.

389646 2005-09-21 09:33:00 A little more information from a dummy!

The display adapter in device manager is S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR.

The driver installed is 4.13.01.3060-13.00.60

How can I tell that this is the latest driver?

Is it likely to make a difference?

389647 2005-09-21 10:02:00 IF money is tight either go for a Geforce FX 5200 or FX 5500

here we go again...

The FX5200 has been known to perform worse then the G4MX series of cards, Its incapble of rendering DX9 at a workable level, infact the entire FX line of cards wasa bust and across the entire range have massive performnce issues rendering DX9 efffects.

Granted this isn't such an issue on the budget level as all under-powered cards will suffer the same issue but in todays market (And yesterdays market) the FX5200 is a poor choice.

If your looking budget then ATI have it all sewn up, Grab the 9250 if thats all your coin will cover, reach for the 9550 if you can, steer clear of the nvidia options unless your looking at a 6200........which is probally out of the equation as it goes for far more then the cards listed.

FX=BAD
MX=BAD
People making recomendations based on fantasy=Bad.

Come on people, this is real money he is looking at spending, Poor suggestions pulled from thin air aren't going to help him make an informed decision.

You won't get workable performance from any tweaking or drivers, the video chipset just isn't up to it.

You could ring around a few shops and ask about second hand cards, I sell off any that come my way to school kids for pocket change....

389649 2005-09-21 11:24:00 I know the FX 500 series is bad but he is on a budget. If he could afford it I would suggest a Geforce FX 6800 LE TDH Leadtek 128mb card which I bought a couple of months ago for $450. It is the best card I have ever had since my Voo Doo 2 days.

Metla is right. Forget the entire FX series. We know he is on a budget - thats why Metla suggested the 9250 - they are dirt cheap now.

389651 2005-09-21 23:00:00 I agree the low end FX range is not desirable to say the least and your current video chipset can't really be tweaked realistically .

The risk is you fork out $75-150 on a video card but are still not happy with it . And I have seen and dealt with a number of poeple that have done this . With video card's you truely get what you pay for .

I would advise, save you penny's and buy a ATI 9600 Pro for around $180 . The 9250 at about $80 will run the Harry Potter game, at a slower more jerky fram rate

Keep in mind games get more demanding, so the 9250 may not run the next HP game (at workable frame rates), but would be a temporary solution .

Likewise the 9600Pro. They are all obsolete tech now.
