389430 2005-09-19 20:45:00 Do you know where the Telephone exchange is?
How far from it are you?
ADSL has an effective range of around 4-6 kms on good copper cable with max loop resistance of around 1000 ohms.

Do you have more than one phone line in your house using the same wiring.
Do you experience crackling or popping on your voice calls at all?

389431 2005-09-19 22:58:00 I didn't mention that when you turn the modem on you can hear the high pitch sound it makes to conect, on the phone.

That is odd, you shouldn't hear anything because the connection takes place at much higher frequency than your ears can hear or a phone can reproduce.

Are you sure your dial-up modem is not still connecting? If it is still connected you need to set your computer to "never dial a connection" or whatever the words are, it is years since I last looked! The quick and dirty solution is to switch the old modem off untill you get your adsl running properly.

You are not connecting the adsl modem through a filter are you? That should go direct to the phone line and all other devices (phone/fax/dialup etc) go through filters.

How about describing your installation and connections in a little more detail, including the type of filters and how you are installing them.

Look for the stupidly simple, because an adsl installation is very basic and hard to cock-up.

389432 2005-09-20 02:14:00 You might want to try filters from DSE, the supplied telecom ones are crap. Sb0h (3744)
389433 2005-09-20 04:32:00 You might want to try filters from DSE, the supplied telecom ones are crap.

Filters only isolate the phones from the incoming line. The adsl signal is a direct feed from the exchange so provided all phones and any other items hooked into the phone line (including dialup modems) are disconnected, you will have a clear line to try for adsl.

That way you eliminate the line, then test each phone/other connection one at a time via your filter until you find the culprit.

389434 2005-09-20 05:47:00 I only got xtra broadband last Monday and man have I had problems. I keep losing connection. They sent me a new modem, I have tried another computer, other filters, disconnected all phones (3) and I still lose connection. I am amazed I am able to write this without losing connection. It would seem that it happenes more, (much more ie every 5 to 10 mins I am rebooting) after 5.30pm and all day in the weekend, perhaps this is the busiest time on the internet? A telecom guy came to the house today, kind of scratched his head and said I DON'T KNOW I will ring you tomorrow and see if you still have the prob. I told him then if you have done nothing then of course I will still have the problem and yep sure enough since 5.38pm tonight I have rebooted 6 times. HELP any idea's.

Did you put the filters in the right place? They should be between the line and the phone. NOT between the line and the modem.

389435 2005-09-20 09:34:00 Hi all, first of all it is not the filters as I have unplugged all phones (3) and have tried 8 filters, makes no difference, It is not my dial up as that is not even connected any more (external) and uninstalled. It is set up correctly and the telecom techo has also had a look and he to heard the modem on the phone and yes sometimes we do have a noise on the phone line, even before we got broadband but everytime telecom check the line they say it is fine. I am getting really fed up with it. Good ole dial up is looking pretty good at the moment. How far from the telecom exchange? I am not sure but Waiouru is only a small town, 3 or 4km sq at the most so shouldn't be to far away from it. Any ideas? PLEASE! kerry (8914)

389437 2005-09-20 10:19:00 How old is the house wiring? Telecom only guarantee adsl performance on the new two-wire system (check their website) .

If your house is old, it could have a 3-wire system that doesn't use twisted pairs . That will not do your signal any good at all and if there is any electrical noise present, or if you are near the transmitter sites for the military communications network you will definitely have problems . Long telephone extension leads have a similar effect .

Have a look inside an outlet, and if the cable is grey with red, blue, white & green wires it is old . If three wires are connected on the back of the phone socket, it is a 3-wire system .

This could affect performance if you are more than 2-3 km from the exchange .

Cheers

389438 2005-09-20 10:43:00 Thanks for that, we only had new phone lines put in less than a year ago, but the wires to the house could be old. BUT right outside, low and behold there are the main power transmitters for the country going right past my house. Could these be the cause of the problem? kerry (8914)
