390291 2005-09-23 03:24:00 just a question about how linux number the hdd partitions..

right now..then gentoo+xp machine has a 20Gb hdd
when i was testing out gentoo
i allocated 6.5Gb for gentoo
512Mb for swap
and 32Mb for boot

now..i pretty much don't go back into windows..and need to let gentoo have more hdd space

the hdd was partitioned so:
hda1 xp ntfs
hda2 boot ext2
hda3 / reiserfs
hda4 swap

now i use partition magic or similar program to cut out a chunck of xp partition
i would end up with some space between hda1 & 2
and if i partition that into reiserfs or ext3
then..would the numbering of the hdd screw up?
would the new partitioned space become hda2 and everything pushed back?
or become hda5 which would be nice and easy for me to mount?

still a linux n00b...
so..gona make sure everything will work nicely b4 i touch anything..
or i'll prob kill it..

390292 2005-09-23 03:36:00 This looks a bit dangerous ... You might hit a limit of four primary partitions. I would normally have an extended partition which would be, e.g, hda4, containing hda5, hda6 ...

But you should be able to cut out the section with PM (with the normal care and attention and backups) then use a linux partitioner to try repartioning. It will tell you what is happening, but nothing will be done to the disk unless and until you tell it to write the new partition table. If in doubt, don't write the new table. :D
