390282 2005-09-23 00:32:00 finally got XP home and 98(1st edition) networked. only issues r:

1.When double click on network neighbour hood in 98 and click winxp machine (named m-100) error comes up saying "\\m-100 not accessible no permission to access resource" i can ping it and get a reply

2. When sharing a dialup connection with Xtra, Win98 machine cannot access internet. at bottom of cannot display page, "no server or dns error" is displayed. does this have something 2 do with DNS and Alternate in Winxp tcp/ip properties?

Win XP maual IP address: 192.168.0.1
subnet 255.255.255.0

default gateway: 192.168.0.1

98

ip: 192.168.0.2

wat is the dns and alternate 4 xtra diapup? or how do i configure IE?

390283 2005-09-23 01:36:00 I take it you've enabled file sharing on both?

And shared a folder on each (NOT the whole hard drive) .

Any firewalls enabled on XP? If so, you have to add 98's ip to it . Depending on which firewall is installed .

There's more to 98 than just the entering the ip address on a network .

You have to add the subnet 255 . 255 . 255 . 0 as well, and enter 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 as the gateway (on 98) .

You have to tick ICS (on the XP dialup / properties / advanced, so 98 can get on the net) .

You dont need 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 as the gateway on the XP dialup . Delete it .

And click on OK .

390285 2005-09-23 03:39:00 Not a good idea trying to share burners . They werent made for sharing .

Umm which PC has the printer connected to it? 98 or XP?

Is it XP Home or Pro?

390287 2005-09-23 05:10:00 Well, I would either connect tv to video out on the video card (if it has one on the main PC).

Rip the dvd u wanna view to hdd, or buy another burner / dvd for the other PC/s. Since they're pretty cheap to buy now.

You could try sharing the pc thats got the burner/dvd.

BUT you'll still have to put the dvd in the main pc's DVD to play it.

390288 2005-09-23 07:30:00 and lastly about sharing the printer

HP PSC 1200 i got the install cd but i cant seem to find the drivers so i can share it. Win98 refuses to install it without the inf file. Same with XP. it is connected to the Win xp (XP home) how do i share it so the 98 can use it without pullin out the usb plug all the time? Apart from that i have a network that works wonderful thanks 2 u guys!

390289 2005-09-23 07:48:00 If you cant install the driver for the printer on XP, disconnect it from the USB port first .

Then open the cd if it doesnt open/autorun when u put the cd in the cd/dvd .

Click on the setup . exe file on the cd not the inf file . Once it has finished installing the drivers, reboot XP, then plug the USB cable for the printer back into a USB port .

Then it SHOULD detect / install the drivers for XP .

Then go to control panel / printers and faxes, highlight the printer icon / sharing option, then select share this printer . (In XP) .

Then if 98 can see and get into XP, go to 98's control panel / printer option and see if the printer appears when u go to add printer on the network .

390290 2005-09-23 20:53:00 If you are running the free version of zone alarm I think that you will troubles with the xp/win98 connection. I did at any rate.

I found using all the "automatic" setting worked best. For what it is worth my settings on Internet settings in the control panel on my win98 machine are ,

security settings "automatic logon only in intranet zone" is ticked

privacy is medium

connections - "dial up and vitual; private Network settings" is blank and boxes in LAN settings are all blank.
