390024 2005-09-22 02:52:00 Just recently, my computer has not been shutting down properly. It hangs at the screen where only the background colour is shown, without the icons or wallpaper, and never gets to the screen 'it is now safe to turn off your computer' (or something like that). I now have to switch off the power at the rear of the computer to power down, meaning you get the scandisk program kicking in on startup.
The only change I have made recently that I am aware of is upgrading Zonealarm.
Any thoughts on how to overcome this problem? Please don't suggest another operating system. I know Me sucks but I'm stuck with it.

Cheers,
Steve

390025 2005-09-22 04:24:00 Uninstall the ZA upgrade. Lots of people have been having issues with this update - especially Win ME people.
You don't need to update a firewall really - only if you are using its anti-virus part and presonally I prefer another anti-virus not ZAs.

390026 2005-09-22 22:08:00 Thanks. Rather than uninstall ZA, I restored the computer to a restore point before the upgrade, otherwise you can't download an old version of ZA from the site to reinstall. This gave problems with both AVG and ZA, neither of which would run. So restore back to original situation, to find both still did not work. Uninstalled ZA and reinstalled with the latest version, repaired AVG installation and it now seems to be working fine again, with the bonus of shutting down properly.

Darn, I have this bookmarked on my work computer but didn't think to use it. Never mind, the new version seems to not be interfering with the shutdown process now. Fingers crossed.
Thanks for the help.
