389917 2005-09-21 06:46:00 first of all, this isn't as bad as it sounds. But yes, I want to uninstall linux. and keep a working windows XP install going

What I have on the main computer is a windows xp + Xandros dual boot thingy going on. Now that I have a dedicated computer with Xandros loaded, I want to remove Xandros from the main computer to free up hard drive space, and keep windows xp bootable. Any ideas on how this could be done? I'm *guessing* it could be setting the XP partition as active, then deleting the xandros partition, but would this leave icky messes with the bootloader?

On a more humane note, how would I remove one linux install from a dual boot linux system? I installed Lycoris alongside Xandros (As an experiment), but now want to remove Lycoris install. It uses the lycoris bootloader. any ideas?

thanks very much, edward :)

Boot off your Windows XP CD and go to Recovery Consol. Then type "fixmbr".

This will restore the orginal Windows XP boot loader to the same way it was before you installed Linux.

389919 2005-09-21 08:35:00 oh, and then you can just nuke the Linux Partition. Battleneter (60)
389920 2005-09-21 08:53:00 Exactly the instructions Battleneter said,

Boot from your Windows XP CD, it'll get into a the Setup process and then you'll get to a menu where you can select Recovery Console (not the F2 automated recovery/rescue).

From there just issue the command FIXMBR then REBOOT or RESTART (I keep forgetting which one).

This will restore Windows bootloader, then inside Windows XP go into Administrative Tools in control panel, double click on computer management, select disk management inside the side bar, find the Linux partitions and remove them, then you could create partitions for Windows to use if you like.

Cheers,

Have a look under the Control Panel (or whatever Xandros uses) and see if you can find a option for reinstalling the bootloader. Then you can format over the old Lycoris partition and use it for storage, or resize your Xandros partition to use the free space. Jen (38)

That is interesting. I needed to do the same thing, and phoned a computer techie for advice. He was not at all sure what to do, but suggested I install BootMagic, set it to boot into XP, reboot, and then use Partition Magic to get rid of the unwanted Linux partition.

I did that and it worked. Now of course, BootMagic is still there (it briefly flashes up when the PC is booting) and I have not been game to uninstall it in case the thing is still set to look for Linux to boot. Could I use your instructions as above to 'fixmbr' and go back to the WinXP bootloader? Not sure why I want to fix something that is working fine, but...

Thanks. John.
