| 390085 | 2005-09-22 07:30:00 | OK this is probably a real noob question, but I want to make sure of the answer before I commence.... I am thinking of making a 400MHz based machine with approx 3 ethernet connections (one to the router - adsl; the other 2 to other computers on the network). This machine will be a file/app server (all stored on second harddrive) and a linux firewall. If the other two quicker machines try to access the net from this machine, will the 400 MHz CPUs slower speed slow them down in any way? If so, by much? The network is a 10/100 utp ethernet network. The machine also has approx 192 MB PC100 RAM If it will slows them down too much, then I will just use it as a file server (storing Linux, and Windows apps for the 1 Linux and 1 Windows computers on the network) |

| 390086 | 2005-09-22 07:38:00 | Nope. I dont think the CPU speed / mobo fsb applies when you're on a network. It'll work like any other slower or faster PC. |

| 390087 | 2005-09-22 09:23:00 | CPU doesn't matter so much when it comes to file servers. I *think* RAM is more important. Why the three NIC's? I understand one is for the ADSL connection, but the two internal networked machines can feed off the second NIC via a hub/switch with the 400 MHz acting as middleman firewall and doing NAT. Each PC shouldn't need its own NIC in the 400 MHz. | Jen (38) | ||
