389941 2005-09-21 23:07:00 Any comments about the seemly identical specifcations for the Polyview V372 and Philips 170B6CB moniters. Does anyone know if they are from the same manufacturer or have I missed a specification parameter that makes them slightly different. I noticed that the "Brightness" figures for Polyview are 400 cd/m2 and the Philips are 250 nits, what is the difference or are they the same. Slim (4633)
389942 2005-09-21 23:33:00 I can say Philips CRT tubes and LCD screens components are often made by LG "when you open them up" at least on many models including TV's. So in my opinion Philips is more an LG monitor than a true Philips as the screens/tubes make up about 65-75% of the cost of the monitor.

I would suggest focus on warranty/support/price and which monitor looks clearer etc, rather than the manufacture, as its nearly impossible to figure out who really makes what these days.

389943 2005-09-21 23:37:00 I was told once that there are only three manufacturers of monitors in the world.
And every brand is based one one of these three.

Don't kow how true this is.

389944 2005-09-22 00:05:00 Yea that was probably right with CRT monitors years ago. There was only a few manufactures of CRT tubes which is effectively the most important part by far.

I believe there are more manufactures now of LCD, but I am guessing maybe only 6?. Certainly a lot less than monitor brands themselves.

389945 2005-09-22 00:11:00 Ive seen 6 or 7 been mentioned as actually making the screens themselves, then anyone so inclined can buy a few hundred thousand of them, whack it in a casing with their own electronics and branding, Make up some specs and sell them.

It has been pointed out a few times that models from different companies using the exact same screen are listed as having completely different specs, especially in relation to response time, contrast, brightness.

As for Polyview, I think they actually do manufacturer the screens themselves, they are a big company wth a few different brand names they sell under and they supply a lot of the companies that sell LCD's.

I for one would be interested in what the internals of a Phillips LCD really is, Guess I will have to wait till I get my hands on a dead one....

389946 2005-09-22 00:19:00 I was told though my company LG was manufacturing CRT and LCD for Philips. That was a few years agao, so I can't say for now. But I have seen LG CRT's in slightly older models of Philips. I have never opened a Philips LCD, so I won't comment.

By the way LG has become a great brand, there optical CD/DVD rom drives virtually never seem to fail, definatly better failure rate than nearly any other brand we have used, -Pioneer, BTC,ACer Aopen,MSI to name a few.

Very odd for company that used to be know as just "Goldstar", and my god they used to make some crap in those days.

389947 2005-09-22 00:23:00 My oldboy has a Phillips LCD, Maybe I should pay him a visit...

Though he does tend to get a little suspicious when he sees me heading towards his gear armed with my screwdriver.....

389950 2005-09-22 00:32:00 A little off topic, but a few years ago I had a phillips amplifier, went visiting hifi shop's and saw a Marantz amp that was identical in looks and spec's, the only difference was the name badge and the higher price tag plod (107)
