390671 2005-09-25 05:14:00 Hi all

Today I have made a webphoto gallery in Photoshop. As I already have an Orcon webpage (I use it for family bits and pieces) I would like to use this to put this series of photos on to as well. I am well used to uploading/downloading files (but not folders) and basic manipulations using WS_FTP. Can I use WS_FTP to put the webphoto gallery onto the same website as well?

The gallery has three folders and two .htm files. The first .htm file is the index.htm. Will this fight with my 'already in place' index file? And how does one overcome this? The other .htm file is a thumbnailframe.htm file. The first folder includes a Frontpage gallerystyle cascading style sheet document, as well as the other images. The other two folders are 'Pages' - includes .htm pages, and thmbnails. :help:

Am I biting off more than I can chew??

Thanks in anticipation!
Cheers

390672 2005-09-25 06:13:00 yes you can upload folders and content using wsftp, I do it all the time. I use Wsftp Le.

The only thing you may have problems with does Your host support front page extensions.

Yes if you try to upload a page with the same name to the same directory level, the upload file will replace the the one that exsists on the site. Reorganise your directory structure on your site to avoid this ( I hope you used relative pathing as opposed to absolute pathing when designing the structure of your web site) Put the the index.htm at different directory level than the other one.

390673 2005-09-25 06:14:00 Yes you shouldn't have a problem uploading with that program at all, I use the same for my Quicksilver webpage.

Just get the login details off your ISP (there may be specific settings they require)

cheers

390674 2005-09-25 06:18:00 WS_FTP can be used to put the webphoto gallery onto the same website but it is best if you create a new folder to upload all your latest folders and files to .

Folders can be transferred to your Orcon site with WS_FTP but I normally create identical folders with WS_FTP then upload batch-loads of the files into those folders . Just be very sure that the folder names are identical to the ones you have on your hard drive, particularly with upper and lower case letters .

As long as you create a new folder to put your latest folders and files within then you will not have any conflicts with the index . htm files . If you don't do this then you have to watch that you do not load another index . htm file into the htdocs folder otherwise your main Home Page will be replaced with the new file . There is no problem having index . htm files in other folders as long as there is only one in each folder .

To direct viewers to your latest pages you can either give them the link to the home page of these pages or you can create a link on the original home page to the home page of your latest pages .

I hope that all makes sense but if not just ask if you need further clarification .

390675 2005-09-25 06:40:00 Thanks for that. Now for further clarification - say I call the new folder webgallery, where would I put this? When I have "?...orcon.net.nz/htdocs" in the top line of the right hand remote site? R.M. (561)
390676 2005-09-25 06:55:00 You would put that folder in the "htdocs" folder (so people can see it, if you put it any where else part from there no one will be able to see it ;))

Hope this helps :)

390677 2005-09-25 07:02:00 As Stu says - in the "htdocs" folder is best. FoxyMX (5)
390678 2005-09-25 08:26:00 Thank you for your patience - I have uploaded the files into 'webgallery' in 'htdocs' . I can see the files in WS_FTP but can't find them/it on my webpage . :badpc:

My webpage is '*orcon . net . nz/index . htm' - what do I need to put in after orcon . net . nz to find them? I tried 'intuitively' 'webgallery' - being the file all the new files went into - but no luck! :(

390679 2005-09-25 08:47:00 You won't be able to find the files on your webpage until you add the links to them yourself .

You add the links to your original homepage file, the '*orcon . net . nz/index . htm' that is in the "htdocs" folder which you then upload to replace the existing index . htm file .

390680 2005-09-25 09:02:00 No - I don't want to do that. Previously I could (and can) add pages to my webpage that aren't obviously connected from the index page. I could then give this address to others, but not necessarily let them have access to the rest of my webpage (unless they were intelligent/computer-savvy enough to work out what it might be). There must be a way... :) R.M. (561)
