390407 2005-09-27 08:17:00 one small thought.....check the power saving for the lan card. turn it off. sometimes, exspecially laptops, the lan card will turn off to save power and it won't come back on. not to sure why (mayby driver issue??) they do that. tweak'e (69)
390408 2005-10-01 14:34:00 Sorry for the horrendously long delay in the reply.
tweak'e, Its not the power saving function in the power saver, but thanks for the thought. I think the reason they do it, is that it may use power having it enabled but disconnected. They also have the same option for the Cardbus.
Tazz, I originally thought the driver update may have worked, but as I am a uni student, I haven't had the chance to watch a movie using Windows Media player for a while. Alas, 5 minutes ago, the problem surfaced again. This time I was not watching a movie, but just let Media Player play music for a while, and my network connection was all busted all over again.
The fact that its WM Player doing this (NB, I am not asking for people to suggest a different media player to use), makes me think it may not be hardware at all, but just Windows screwing up on me. I have noticed Windows refuses to shut down if I try and disable/enable the network connection after it breaks (yes, I run regular spyware/virus scans).

So anyways, should i format c:, is the ultimate question that needs to be asked here.

Cheers in anticipation,

roddy

PS, sorry if the post is confusing, im drunk atm, and will check it, and repost if necessary in the morn.

390409 2005-10-02 01:32:00 How and where does the nic get its ip. It sounds like the lease on the ip is expireing and its unable to renew. If you are using DHCP try assigning a manual ip and see if it still happen. beama (111)
390410 2005-10-02 02:46:00 Thanks for the idea beama, I'll give it a go now, and see how it goes. roddy_boy (4115)
390411 2005-10-09 13:45:00 Well again, I have taken forever to reply. Beama, I wasn't able to assign a manual IP, as I live in a flat and that would have meant having to assign IP's for my flatmates as well, and it was too much of a hassle, so I just increased the IP lease time to 100 days so it shouldn't affect it in that sense. The problem hadn't re-occured again, as I haven't used Windows Media Player much since then, but it happened again just before. I have noticed that my Local Area Connection status icon in my taskbar (2 small computers), always seems to only have the front computer lightened up when it screws up, and it stays lightened. I double clicked it this time, to see what I could get out of that, and it was very strange... The number of packets sent was changing roughly every second, surprisingly, but the strange thing was it was DECREASING!! Now that was just plain wierd to me. I was tempted to leave it and let it go down to 0, just to see what would happen, but it was only going at about 4 packets/sec, and it had sent 144000 packets. Would have taken awhile.
This problem just seems to be getting stranger and stranger.

Any more ideas anyone?

Cheers,

roddy

390412 2005-10-11 05:55:00 Ok, I manually assigned an IP and changed my router to use manually assigned IP's, watched an episode of lost, and it did it again.
I think I'll give the repair center a call tomorrow to see what they have to say.

cheers for the help anyway.

390413 2005-10-11 11:43:00 I'd look for diagnostic tools for the network card/chipset.
Try a different cable and port on your ADSL router too....

Borrow a PCMCIA network card or some other network adapter if you can.

390414 2005-10-11 11:46:00 Are you running Ad-aware?? Rob99 (151)
390415 2006-05-08 20:08:00 Gah this problem has started coming back with a vengence. It sort of waned for awhile, only happening occasionally, but now it's happening all the time.
Here (www.imagef1.net.nz) is a pic showing the number of packets sent having gone down over time.
Any new ideas? I have formatted and reinstalled Windows recently. (~2 weeks ago)
Gah and the warranty period is over, so really don't wanna have to take it back to get it fixed.

Cheers for any help,

roddy

390416 2006-05-08 20:24:00 Hmm the pics dont tell us anything.

Is this the main PC, connected to the net now, or is it networked to another computer, thats connected to the net??

Is it the same prob, where u cant get any browsers working / MSN not connecting? Or is it something different, with your new post??

Any firewalls installed now, besides XP's default one?

If you've updated the LAN drivers, (or whatever drivers are installed), did u get the updates (if there are any), from the site, not from the Windowsupdate site?
