1378207 2014-06-30 23:47:00 Last Wednesday Noel Leeming ran a reopening special on Panasonic Hi Def 32" LED TVs for $199 at their Queen St (Auckland) store. Initially it caught my eye because our old Sony 32" LCD was getting a bit long in the tooth. It cost us $3200 (staff price) when we bought it so that is a fair indication of age, and we had to drive to Huntly to pick it up since that was where the '"staff' sister in law worked in an appliance shop.

There were only 30 on offer, and there was a 1 in 30 chance of winning $10,000 worth of travel, but ordinarily I couldn't win a kick in a street fight so I didn't have much hope that there would be any left by the time I crawled through the traffic to get there! However, much to my surprise there were still a few left and I managed to scored one without using my elbows!

If I can get $100 on TM for the old one and its UHF Freeview decoder we'll have a $99 new TV. :D

Cheers

1378209 2014-07-01 02:39:00 That was a good buy. We have the same vintage Sony Bravia as you. Curious as to what signs of old age yours is showing?. Pato (2463)

1378211 2014-07-01 04:58:00 At that price I woulda bought one too, great score. I'm on TV no. 4 since I got my first LCD TV (been stolen twice) and geez have the prices dropped.

1st was a 40" Sony Bravia for I think $3600 or thereabouts
2nd was just the same size newer model and I think the price had dropped about $600 by then
3rd was a higher end 46" model for < $3000 (didn't buy it though, did a deal on the insurance claim)
4th is a 60" plasma and I love it, bought it on a whim when I was in noel leeming on my birthday and saw they were "only" $1599.

20 inches bigger than the first one and $2000 cheaper :)
I haven't reached my limit yet I would still go bigger even in my small lounge.

There has been a faint buzz on the sound for a few years now, only noticeable if you mute the audio signal, which suggests that filtering for the audio output stage might be getting low. However, the other, and far more serious fault, is that the remote on/off button is no longer reliable. This is a grievous fault indeed, as somebody has to walk right across the room to turn it off, and if you forget to turn it on before going to the couch you have to walk all the way back to the TV then back again to the couch.

You can imagine how stressful this is for me, but Mrs T says she needs the exercise so she doesn't mind coming upstairs from the clothesline to press the button for me, or to get out of bed to turn it off if I've been watching a late movie!

All in all it has been an excellent TV, unlike the little Sanyo LED-19XZ11 in my office, which cost $299 and is only a few years old, but has developed alzheimers and refuses to remember its channel numbers. What is worse, for some reason it keeps shifting the three-digit UHF channel designators all over the place. It acts as if it has a 'save' button to store the settings but refuses to use it. I think its a bit blonde actually, nice to look at but nothing upstairs and totally unpredictable.

Cheers

1378214 2014-07-03 04:22:00 Thanks for that information Billy. I will be keeping an eye on ours as it is getting a bit long in the tooth and I guess it will need replacing shortly.
I hope by mentioning this I haven't given it the kiss of death!!. At least your Sony was giving you some exercise.

1378216 2014-07-03 22:53:00 Who needs remotes? The day I get too tired to tell the missus to change channels is the day I need to get rid of the TV.
It's gone.
