| 1378028 | 2014-06-27 01:27:00 | The time has come to move on from my 10yr old Nokia "muesli bar". I'm looking for a smartphone < $400. Main uses will be phone, texting, email, some GPS, and ..... Am OS neutral, happy to tinker with Android - very comfortable with Win 8.1. Prefer 4 - 4.5" screen, not a phablet. I'd welcome feedback on possible models, merits of parallel import suppliers v chain stores and anything else relevant. Thanks |

| 1378030 | 2014-06-27 04:23:00 | Nokia Lumia 520 or 620  Eww no. Anything other than Jokia. In the $400 price range you are probably better off looking at a large selection of Samsungs, baring in mind that the cheaper you go the crappier the phones get and the further north of $400 you go be better features and more reliable and easier to use they get. FTR - MS is moving towards installing a version of Android on Nokia phones after the craptacular sales of Windows OS on Nokia phones. www.nzherald.co.nz |

As for all the "junk" on a samsung phone - it's mostly a matter of personal preference. I like the samsung touchwiz interface, am quite impressed with the camera app - and can safely ignore the samsung store and apps without it having any impact on the experience in general. It's really not that bad. I have a galaxy S3 and for comparison I also have a nexus 7 with stock android. Both are smooth & responsive and not drastically different to use. I understand the attraction of the stock interface without bloatware, but if the extra manufacturer additions don't have a noticeable impact on performance then there's not much of an issue. Saying it's loaded with junk makes it sound like there's no room left. |

| 1378037 | 2014-06-27 06:16:00 | I have the Samsung Trend Plus, which costs about 1/2 the price of the S3 mini yet both look similar and only appears to be a bit lower spec'd - it seems mainly in internal storage and the camera's functions. Since your needs appear to be non intensive (i.e. no camera/video use, gaming, music, multi app tasking) the Trend may suit... As for Touch Wizz... not too bad - but I use custom launchers/home screen apps (lifehacker.com) (action launcher pro, (www.talkandroid.com) smart launcher pro 2 (www.phonearena.com), sub launcher, nova, metro, etc) to quickly switch to alter the entire interface with plenty of customization and category grouping, drawer -sliders, icon packs, themes, app - widget pop-ups, etc. |
