1377986 2014-06-26 10:38:00 There has been plenty of recent NZ Govt - Telecom 111 reviews and you may find an answer or future track the discussions papers at MBIE (www.med.govt.nz) in conjunction with the beehives CIT. (www.beehive.govt.nz) NZ it seems has no regulations regarding mobile phone emergency locations with telecom/telco's compared to the EU and USA. kahawai chaser (3545)
1377987 2014-06-26 20:47:00 Of course you need a smartphone to actually use an app.
Counts out all the non smart phones.

And I thought of the Caitlins, when I was down there a meeting was held with Telecom and Vodafone to complain about (among other things) the lack of cellphone coverage there. As in none. Panicked tourists would attempt to ring only to find their phones didn't work at all.

Nothing was done about it....so an app won't be too much use.

1377988 2014-06-26 21:37:00 Following on from what PCTek pointed out --- There was one of those Police rescue type programs on TV the other night . They showed some guys who were out riding motorcross style bikes, one had a serious fall .

They had no cellphone coverage, BUT one of them did have a emergency GPS locator beacon which they activated, the rescue people managed to locate them quickly and the guy was cared for . They said with no cell phone coverage it would have taken hours to get help .

Didn't actually see the locator, but I suspect it was something like these on the following site: http://www . locatorbeacons . co . nz/

1377989 2014-06-26 23:45:00 Correct Wainui ... PLB's use direct satellite communications and the frequency is also able to be picked up by commercial aircraft. I haven't been in a position bad enough to use mine, but would never go hunting without one ... Fiordland is a mighty big place and very easy to get injured, even for experienced hunters/hikers. A cellphone in most parts is only any good for playing games.

Depending on where and how often you go bush, many sports shops also hire them out. I paid around $900 for a combo GPS / PLB ... peanuts compared to losing your life ... or a friend.

1377990 2014-06-27 01:12:00 A normal plb costs about $600 & the battery life is 7 years then about $150 for a replacement. Bargain compared to your life. gary67 (56)

Thanks a lot for the feedback. I have installed my first paid app, Emergency Call Locator, after having a SP for about two years. I haven't been able to save it (the country) in a way that the NZ's 111 contacts come up first.
Have used a PLB when going tramping though for normal day to day use it seems to me a good idea to use the smartphone(SP). I can't wait to go on naked broadband once I have a ECL.:D
