1391025 2014-12-28 23:27:00 The hard drive and cpu are not. When you mentioned the Hard Drive not working, do you mean its not spinning up, or no OS loading ? If the HDD is not spinning up when power is applied it could also mean a power Supply has gone bad, which can also cause the remainder not to work.

What Fred posted is often the only real way to tell where the problem is, its a process of elimination sometimes to find whats at fault.

BTW -- The heatsink paste is not glue, but what does happen is it "seals" the heatsink to the CPU, so as soon as air gets under it, the vacuum lets go and off it pops.

1391026 2014-12-29 04:20:00 The Standby power LED (SB_PWR) comes on. Is the only LED I can see that is on.

The computer was shipped from Ohio to New Mexico via UPS wrapped very well. But the 2 connections to the DVD drive came off and for a few weeks I didn't notice since I was not using the DVD. When I plugged it back in. Windows 7 would not recognize it. Finally, I got it to recognize the drive but it will not play DVD's.

I have looked for connections that may not be plugged in and I don't think there are any I missed on the motherboard.

1391027 2014-12-29 05:24:00 Can you please clear some of the conflicting answers.

In post 1 you mentioned Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO was installed

In post #3 mentioned
The original heatsink used a different bracket. I had to remove it to use the bigger heatsink.

I did not remove the motherboard to install the new heatsink.

How did you get the mounting bracket out, most boards require a bit of room to drop the old bracket. (Not all cases have a hole in the chassis to allow removal)

What may have happened is if the board was not removed to change the mounting bracket, its possible the circuits that run under or close to the CPU may have gotten damaged somehow. What can also happen is if a different bracket is attached its not uncommon to have then short circuit the board some place, resulting in no starting.
What can also cause this problem is if the heatsink is not seated fully the CPU wont detect it right and refuse to start.

The AMD CPU's are not held in that secure, they have a ZIF fit (Zero insertion force) meaning with the locking arm open as long as the pins of the CPU are lined up right, they should just drop into place with no force at all. When removing the Heatsink theres not a lot of force required to pull the whole cpu and heatsink out at the same time. Paste holds on very well :)

There is one way to tell if something is shorting. Remove the new Heatsink, remove the new mounting plate, place the old Heatsink on the CPU with your hand, so its sitting flat, plug it in to the CPU power socket, try to start it up. If it boots then theres a short someplace, if not you may need to remove the board from the case, attach only devices to get it to boot, and start, see if it boots. You only need the CPU, RAM, and monitor attached, (KB & mouse if you want) thats enough to get it to boot and display the BIOS and complain about no HDD etc.

1391028 2014-12-29 07:02:00 You only need the CPU, RAM, and monitor attached --- Add to that the CPU Fan just in case it wasn't known. wainuitech (129)
1391029 2014-12-29 21:18:00 The hard drive is not spinning and no lights on the front of the PC come on. The only light that comes on is the Standby power LED (SB_PWR). The power supply is providing power to all the fans and the fan in the power supply is working.

I realize that the "paste" is not glue but the bond was as good as super glue between the CPU and the heatsink. The paste was as dry as mortar.

If the motherboard CPU slot was a not an AM3 I would be thrilled to "have to" put another CPU in the slot but the CPU "upgrade" from the one installed is a very minimal upgrade.

I am going to take the CPU out and put it back in without the heatsink and see if it will work.

Wish me luck!!!

Two items left from your post -- If the Hard Drive is Not spinning up, like the power is not even connected, then there is either something wrong with the Power Supply, or the Hard Drive is dead . With the fact the HDD is not spinning & theres boot problems, first try another power Supply ( if you have one) if the Power supply is faulty that WILL stop the PC from booting .

Read the add on post from yesterday, place the Original Heatsink back on the CPU, it doesn't need to be clamped down, but no heatsink if it boots will over heat the CPU real quick .

Just a suggestion: Unless you have access to spare parts either have them yourself or know someone who has spares, I'd suggest you take the Computer to a repairer who will have all the parts, other wise it will be rather expensive buying new parts hoping that's the problem . Since it appears you are in USA (The computer was shipped from Ohio to New Mexico) Cant really recommend anyone since this is a new Zealand help Forum .

Good luck
