1390916	2014-12-26 07:17:00	Quite often with a recovery or a new installation one finds there are devices that are not recognised by Windows. Nothing new there, but what programme do you people recommend to identify the errant device so you can look for the correct drivers? Google produces quite a few programmes, but it seems the worth of all of them is quite varied by the comments. :thanks	B.M. (505)
1390917	2014-12-26 08:03:00	Dont trust any of those programs. Often they will suggest a certain Driver and its completely wrong. Do it manually, its not to hard. Found an article ( saves writing it all out :p ) www.pcworld.com What you do is if the Hardware ID is to broad, then narrow it down by the name of the computer or motherboard, then the Hardware ID. The drivers needed should be on the Part manufactures web site.	wainuitech (129)

I’ve now managed to clear all except one of them including a WebCam cleverly disguised as a USB port. Don’t know why I didn’t think of that? :groan: Anyway, all that is left is a Ethernet Controller which I simply can’t find a driver for. God only knows what it really is but here are the details if you’d care to have a guess. I’ve tried and retried the LAN driver from the ESUS site but no go. 61226123	B.M. (505)
1390919	2014-12-27 05:20:00	The numbers/Letters point to the Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter Go back to the Motherboard site, on the model look for any Atheros Wireless Network Adapter. Sometimes they will have intel or other brands as well. On the Odd occasion the network adapter, can also actually mean bluetooth. ( just to confuse the hell out of everyone ;) )	wainuitech (129)

( just to confuse the hell out of everyone ;) ) Hoooooray, got rid of all the Question & Exclamation marks but what a circus . :banana As per previous post a USB2 driver turned out to be a Webcam, but to top things off came the Ethernet Controller . As you correctly pointed out Wainui the evidence pointed to an Atheros Wireless Network Adapter but the ASUS site only had an Intel one which wouldn’t install . Soooo, I went looking for an Atheros Driver and found a few, however, the first one I tried came with an installation package which upon running advised I must be connected to the internet for it to load . What, I’m trying to connect to the internet you fool, and if I was able to connect I wouldn’t be wasting my time trying to . *! . . **! . I’m afraid the language was quite uncivil . 6124 Anyway, I eventually found some drivers without an installation package of their own and installed them by means of reinstall drivers and pointing to the folder I put them in . Bingo, I was surrounded by Wi-Fi connections so all is good . :clap But I just hope Doctors don’t start treating blindness with hip replacements . :rolleyes:	B.M. (505)

1390922	2014-12-31 04:20:00	I've found IOBIT driver booster to be pretty handy I thought just for fun I’d give it a go and lo and behold it advised me I had 16 drivers out of date and it could replace all of them with newer ones. Well I was sceptical but thought seeing I now had drivers that worked I could always reinstall without too much trouble, now I knew what things were disguised as. Anyway, it chugged away for a few minutes and advised it had successfully updated all of them. With some trepidation I went into the “System” expecting to see a maze of ?’s & !’s but there was only one, but wouldn’t you know it, it was for a “Ricoh MMC Host Controller” which I didn’t have. However, google was my friend and I found the correct one, installed it and bingo, I had a clean sheet again. But regretfully the saga doesn’t end there, when I went to close down the computer I couldn’t because of a “CiceroUIWndFrame” error. My immediate suspicion was that Cic had been hacking my computer and revenge was necessary :devil but a quick google revealed that this oddly named problem was caused by MS Office. The computer has MS Office XP Pro installed but I’ve never struck the problem before. The cure was to disable the “Speech & Handwriting” provisions in the “Alternative User Input”. :confused: That worked, but it’s not how I like to fix things. Clearly an updated driver caused the problem but the question is which one? The problem has been encountered by others but the answer other than the work around described I simply can’t find. Anyone any thoughts on the matter? Cicero’s Wind Frame has a lot to answer for. :D	B.M. (505)
1390923	2014-12-31 04:35:00	As you found out, you have installed the speech and handwriting recognition subsystem of Microsoft Office XP. I NEVER trust those types of programs as they more often then not, install "drivers updates" that are either fake, or not really the right drivers, and A LOT install malware of some sort. If you always get the latest drivers from the manufactures you cant really go wrong.	wainuitech (129)
1390924	2014-12-31 20:56:00	Yes, I usually install the full packet with programmes like Office, just to save me hunting for the disk when I need a facility that hasn’t been loaded. XL is a case in point when a number of Add-Ons like Analysis Pack, Solver, etc. are not installed by default. Anyway, having given the matter some thought I decided to do a Repair Install of Office and blow me down but everything is now turned on and working. The computer even turns on and off as it should plus there are no ?’s or!’s. :clap Whilst I agree with you that the manufactures own site should be the best place to get the correct drivers, I have found this to not always be the case, this time being no exception, which leads me to think another string to the bow may not be a bad thing. On this basis I will keep IOBIT as to date it hasn’t caused me any more grief than traditional methods. Hopefully, I will never need to use it again, :D and thanks apsattv for the suggestion. :thumbs:	B.M. (505)
1390925	2014-12-31 21:08:00	Thought I'd give iobit a go and see -- It came up with 3 updates. 1 Audio 2 Network 3 Touchpad Lets work in reverse --- Touch pad --- Errrr No not on this desktop with a real basic Keyboard/Mouse. Network - Checked whats in here - Wrong ones from Iobit- says the update is Atheros , errr working ones are Realtek. Audio - OK got the make right realtek, said it was very old. So installed them -- guess what stopped working after the required reboot ? Lucky I always make a restore point first, ran that and audio working again on original drivers. Oh BTW Iobit installs another program unless you are careful. ;)	wainuitech (129)
