390746 2005-09-25 11:35:00 I have an old HP Pavilion 6611 pretty slow(500mhz) so i am getting a Celeron 1.1 Ghz, but im not sure if it will work with my motherboard(probably to old) so can someone tell me if it will work with my motherboard. I think its an 82801AA or something and is socket 370. monkyduderan (8955)

390748 2005-09-25 12:22:00 No, you will need to get a motherboard that will support the cpu. allanl (1957)
390749 2005-09-25 12:26:00 how do you know that?

390751 2005-09-25 22:55:00 check on the HP site. don;t holdyur breath tho. most supermarket pc's don't allow much in the way of upgrades. also very few of the early 370's could go as high as 1 gig however there where some tricks you could do to get them to work.

personally i would use the highest speed p3 it can support. you will find it will run faster than the celeron.

390752 2005-09-25 23:15:00 I agree your old board nearly certainly won't support it.

Thats not much of an upgrade, really your swapping a Obsolete CPU that can't really cut the mustard, for one that can barely cut the mustard but not for long.

For $350 ish you can buy a AMD 64 processor and motherboard that won't need upgradeing for at least a few years, but you would have to investigate upgrade issues like case size, ram compatability PSU output etc.

My advice... Save some Dolleros and buy a clone box upgrade and ditch the old faithful, I doubt you will be happy doing much else.

If your getting the Celeron for like $50 then it may be worth it (thats if the motherboard actually supported it)

390753 2005-09-26 02:40:00 not to mention that it will be highly likely that a new mobo will not fit in the HP case.... Prescott (11)
390754 2005-09-27 11:12:00 Id sugest to maybe just buy a new board cpu ram and case with power supply, finding older components to fit in is usualy a bit of a headache. This way at least you get what you want , and you know it will work with eachother. I sugest going for a LGA775 setup running SATA Drives. Pritty much the best running affordable setup. Mike_SA (8956)
