Try using http://www.videolan.org after you've removed ALL video codecs.
VideoLAN Client (VLC) will play almost any file you can possibly throw at it, but the advantages of the likes of Nemo and/or K-Lite Codec packs is that its all contained within the application itself. Worth the download :)

NO NO HELL NO!!!

Nemo and K-Lite are junk

FFDSHOW is open source with NO spyware and is the industry standard for playing ripped movies, Where do you think those packs get there codec source from? They just add there spyware crap and repackage it.

Don't touch them with a BARGE POLE.

FFDSHOW and Vosub all the way!.

There are plenty of threads all over the net to back up what I am saying (to lazy to re-find one). Have a look

390782 2005-09-26 23:51:00 spyware in Nemo? they must have added it recently. i havn't touch it for a long time.

try not to use codec packs if you can because everyone has a different idea on what codecs are best etc and a lot bundle codecs/filters that can clash on some pc's and most of the codecs will simply never be used.

390783 2005-09-27 00:03:00 Seriously, don't touch those codec packs!

Well I am in the the twilight zone . One of us is taking drugs .
For the recored about 18 months ago ish I ran spybot and then installed Nemo, ran spybot again, HEAPS of spyware . I did this cause the thread I read warned of this . Not only that but the codecs arn't as up to date as FFDSHOW (open source) etc .

I just googled it and came up with a heap of threads . Ill just cut and paste, rather than link (a few porn pics lol) .

grakh at 2005-03-12 13:54 GMT:

Codecpack might not only contain spyware and virii, but they often make it hard to uninstall (often you have to reinstall your OS), sometimes contain parts which should NEVER be installed on the same system (ie Nemo used to have this problem) and in other ways make your system unstable . Get FFDshow instead . if you need an encoder, it is better to just get the one you want .

Fahrenheit at 2005-02-12 15:17 GMT:

Do NOT download ANY "codecpack"!!! -> They often contain spyware! The only thing i use to playback movies is ffdshow (XviD, DivX, Ac3, subtitles and many more!) and an DVD-player (recommend PowerDVD)! ffdshow: . net/projects/ffdshow" target="_blank">sourceforge . net PowerDVD: . gocyberlink . com/multi/products/product_main . jsp?ProdId=1" target="_blank">www . gocyberlink . com

390784 2005-09-27 00:21:00 Ok well lets put it this way

I have over 700 ripped movies (all legit swiss skiing movies ). And all I use is FFDSHOW, Vosub and power DVD for well DVD's. This setup does not "glug" up your system, FFDshow has very low CPU usage compared to other codecs and no spyware.

390785 2005-09-27 00:44:00 well i see who the ffdshow fanboy is ;)

i don't like codec packs in the first place however i suspect the spyware your talking about is actually from the adware supported codecs it has bundled with it. if you download the codec seperately you still get the spyware. i moight be wrong as i havn't touch a codec pack in ages and there is no need to.

as far as ffdshow goes it has crashed out most of my pc's and mates so its got the bin. XVID handles most and is much smaller download than the likes of divx.

now back to the actually problem.....

i recently changed most of my pc ond now i cant play any movies
so what have you changed? from what to what?

Ummmmmmm ok, twighlight zone, never seen FFDShow crash a system .

I am a FFDshow fanboy as I have tried nearly everything else perosnally and not just relied of forum posts . You clearly don't read forums like Nforce . nl, ISOnews or VCDquaility, I have to say its fairly common knoweledge .

There are a lot of poor codec packs out there, and the crashing is probably codec related .

BTW there is nothing wrong with Xvid (except the crappy player), but it does NOT play all the newest rippied movies, it also has higher CPU usage than FFDshow . If you don't download ripped movies you won't know this .

forgodsakes man, loose all the codecs and JUST install FFDshow, Vosub and powerDVD, then come back here and post "thanks you were right" .

Good move on swapping AV BTW :)
