390771 2005-09-25 15:39:00 hey everyone
im new to these forums on the net but i was told its the best way for help
So heres my problem

i recently changed most of my pc ond now i cant play any movies or clips on web site.whenever i use any types of clip players like windows media, Divx player, real player, power dvd, etc...
my pc either freezes or i get the windows explorer crash.
now i read on one of the forums that the power suply could be the problem but i want to try every other solutions before going out and buy a new one.
but just to note my power suply is one the only part that i DIDN'T change.

now i downloaded a ton of codecs and still nothing. I scanned my pc with norton anti-virus and with adaware pro everything is clear. so if theres something that im missing please tell me
thanks alot everyone

390772 2005-09-25 20:48:00 What version of Windows is installed?

Whats the speed of the CPU?

How much ram is installed?

You could post a hijackthis log here www.spywareinfo.com

Unzip the hijackthis file first, run it, then scan / copy and paste the log here, just to make sure.

390773 2005-09-25 22:04:00 My first bet is Drivers or Graphics card personally......

What Graphics card/drivers you running?

And welcome to PF1 :-)

390774 2005-09-25 23:03:00 The most obvious thing to look at first is codecs. Its NOT going to be a power supply issue, and even a low end pentium 2 CPU can run movies smoothly, so I doubt that too. Graphics drivers are possible but definitely way down the list to look at.

There are Many REALLY crap codec packs around like "Nemo" and others, that install a ton of spyware BUT are as buggy as hell.

Un-install ALL codecs, then run Spybot or another spyware remover. Then install FFDSHOW and maybe Vosub codecs, thats it... thats all you need, 99% of movies and video clips will play on just those two except maybe quicktime (eew). I would avoid Divx as well, there is no need to have it.

A few years ago I installed dozens of codecs not knowing exactly what I needed and had constant stability problems. The problem is I found a few codes were pigs to get rid of and I need to reinstall Windows. If you still have probs, nuke windows and install FFDshow and Vosub, I guarantee it will work like a champ.

390776 2005-09-26 01:56:00 HD: 80 GHZ
OS: windows XP pro (without SP2)
Perhaps you do mean 80 GB ?And why didn't you install SP2 since it offers tons of vital updates and patches?

Cheers :)

390777 2005-09-26 02:15:00 well 80 ghz does look a bit stupid

and for sp2 i cant install it because my windows cd isnt "official"
but on my old pc i used the same win xp without sp2 and could play movies without a crash or freeze so i doubt that it would be the problem

390778 2005-09-26 12:29:00 Not a good idea to go 'fessing up to that sorta thing around here.

Try using http://www.videolan.org after you've removed ALL video codecs.
VideoLAN Client (VLC) will play almost any file you can possibly throw at it, but the advantages of the likes of Nemo and/or K-Lite Codec packs is that its all contained within the application itself. Worth the download :)

390779 2005-09-26 21:28:00 but i still dont know how to remove the older codecs installed on my pc  ghost316 (8957)
390780 2005-09-26 23:41:00 Can't see anything obvious.

Beyond that, you have to realise you could spend maybe 10hours+ playing around trying to get Windows clean or a confirmed 1 hour ish reinstalling and setting everything back up, hope you can see what I am getting at.

BTW Don't use Nortons AV (saw reference to it), its a pig as its simply slows down general OS operation. Everyone has there own preference, but try something else even a free AV like AVGFREE. You can always switch back if you don't agree (although I doubt you will after using something else for a while).

Do a clean install and the 2 codecs I suggested, post back if symptoms persist.

Oh You may also need to powever DVD, can't remeber. Try without first.
