| 391739 | 2005-09-28 11:53:00 | sigh . . . This is out of my league big time . . . . . . . . . A friend rang up in a panic, seems her partner has been visiting some Picture sites of the unclothed female and some much kind . . . . . . :yuck: and she now has thousands of these images on her comp . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . she has young children and is going to clearly create a scene with her partner . . . . . . . about these items very much visible on the family comp . after this bit i got blurry vision cos i was lost in the graphic details she was giving . . . so missed what windows she is using, but its IE, and she doesnt know what firewall they have, she muttered about AVG . . . . . and temp files . I looked at the FAQs, but am not sure what to define these items as? popups and the way to deal with these is? I dont know whether she opens a prog and they their or just when connected to net or what . . . . . . . . . what info do i need to find out? Are they likely to be embedded somewhere in her comp? Will adaware / spybot find them? may need to reread that faq a bit . . . . . . tomorow . . . . after the shock has gone . . . :p is this an easy thing to get rid of or does it need the work of a fluffy slipper man? :( scares me silly this sort of thing . . . . i have no wish to veiw this type of material . . . . . . and the idea of children seeing it is terrifying . . . . Help please . No scathing comments please, it is not my comp and not my partner . . . . . i have never dealt with this subject matter before on any ones comp . . . . :waughh: sigh . . . . . . beetle |

| 391740 | 2005-09-28 12:02:00 | First thing to do is hit it with crap cleaner, then spybot and the usuals. If kids are going to use the comp then I think it should probally be done properly, if porn sites have been visited then there is bound to be multiple nasties in the background. |

Make sure AV, etc, is up to date (download fresh ones and burn to disc to take with you). Include Opera or FF & Thunderbird, regcleaner, a firewall and MS Antspware on your fixit disc, the MS one does pretty well on IE and other MS stuff, not so good on 3rd party. Are you confident in Control Panel, Manage Computer [sic], Services? If you are, disable Windows Messanger. Or, you could send Met's around, I'm sure he wouldn't mind. |

Search for .jpg or .bmp or whatever formats they may be in. Having a firewall etc won't help much if the person is deliberately downloading the stuff. Perhaps he should get his own PC if he is going to continue to view stuff the kids shouldn't see. |

| 391744 | 2005-09-28 22:10:00 | Hi Beetle. The free Picassa2 will run through the machine and catalogue all grahics in to one main area of folders and subfolders. Then very easy yo quickly view the contents of each folder and delete whole folders at a time. I did similar for a friend recently, although her miscreant was the older of several sons. | Scouse (83) | ||
| 391745 | 2005-09-28 22:19:00 | Picassa wont search through temp or cache files, This would leave potentially thousands of porn images on the comp, granted they are under the hood but easily found... | Metla (12) | ||
| 391746 | 2005-09-28 22:26:00 | The only way to truly clean out is to go through a lot of the folders yourself manually Nero7 which is coming out soon has NeroScout which AFAIK can scan the entire HDD for images, sounds like what you're after :) |

| 391747 | 2005-09-28 22:38:00 | Most graphics programmes can show a page of thumbnail images - pretty sure Irfan can. So using that (after enabling Show Hidden Files and Folders) to browse through all the directories she can discover any images that need deleting. Or, do a search of the computer's entire contents from Windows search utility - select Advanced and include hidden files, and do a search for *.jpg. The image names will almost certainly reveal which are the nasties, where they are, and they can be deleted outright from there. Remember to clear the Recycle bin after. |
