391724 2005-09-28 10:24:00 I have been scouting pricespy.co.nz for a decent graphics card around the $200 price tag. I have narrowed it down to these two:

- $204.75 nVidia GeForce 6600 256MB AGP8x
- $247.50 nVidia GeForce 6600GT 128MB AGP8x

THE DILEMMA:
The 6600GT 128MB uses DDR3 RAM, but only has half the capacity of the 6600 256MB, which uses the slower DDR1 RAM. Basically greater capacity RAM Vs faster RAM. Which card will give the better noticeable performance?

The closet review I could find is between the two models - 6600 128MB and the 6600GT 128MB. Answer ID 197 in the FAQ and Knowledge base section of the nvidia.com site.

391725 2005-09-28 10:32:00 Higher clockspeed over more ram any day of the week, The GT will kill the othercard, they aren't even in the same league.... Metla (12)
391726 2005-09-28 10:55:00 The 6600GT card is better by a long shot even though it has half the ram. Who wants more textures if the frame rate is 10fps lol.

There are some 6600GT *256MB* cards around but are tad hard to find.
The non GT cards are dogs, don't even think about it.

Actually have a look at pricespy, its a good place to start.

BTW its more than just ram speeds, THE GPU of the GT is faster than the non GT.

391727 2005-09-28 11:29:00 Got my PNY Technologies GeForce 6600GT 256MB AGP 8x DDR3 on Tuesday (a day earlier than was told ;) ) and it runs beautifully. I'm now able to run Unreal Tournament 2004 on full settings on 1280x1024 without much slowdown [for real crazy parts I just press the change to default settings button in the video menu].

It is a real boost to my system, my old card was a GeForce4 MX 440. I managed to get and average of 60fps on 800x600 with good image quality, or just average quality at 1024x768, smooth but not too pretty. This card is the best.

btw, I won it on e-Bay for $121 ($1 dollar over the second highes bid  ) Which calculated to about a total of $153 U.S.Dollars total with shipping. I'm not absolutely sure If I got a real deal, but I can tell you the impressive leap overall this card has brought to my system is awe inspiring.

I've a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz processor (waiting for 64bit proccessors to become less expensive). Two sticks of 512Mb DDR SD-RAM, my internet connection is at 5Mbps, and overall I'm very happy with my current setup

I've optimized the hell out of my computer, and basically over time it seems as though I've unlocked most of it's potential (I've seen a minimum of a 10x improvement in performance since I first got this PC, nevermind the card). Yes, and I recently fixed my fan by oiling the ball bearings [damn I'm good]. :p

391731 2006-02-06 07:05:00 Heya there guyz and gals,

Thanks for answering all those q'z. I was wondering the same thing and this thread really helped answering my questions.

But I still have one more question! What is the difference if I buy a nVidia Geforce 6600GT or a Xpertvision GF 6600GT or a Pixelview GF 6600GT....(you get the idea.

There are so many different companies who seem to have bought the GF 6600GT as OEM and put their label on it. Is there any difference or is it just different software bundles?

Thanx in advance for the answers. I hope someone answers me before tomorrow because Im hoping to go pick it up then.

Thankyou
BTW Sorry for the long post (im new) :)

391732 2006-02-06 07:56:00 They are all Nvidia chipsets, but they are manufactured by whomever gets the lisence to do so, If you see one listed as just nVidia 6600GT then the seller has just neglectad to list the manufactuer of the card, Most probally so they can source the cheapest available on any given day.

Im not sure if nVidia still manufactur the chipsets or if that is farmed out as well., But the same issue applies to Motherboards, You can buy an Nforce 4 motherboard from any number of manufacturer and they all use the nVidia Nforce 4 Chipset, but they provide all the rest of the components and assemble them.

So they don't have any extras like fans etc? Because I heard that the legend card is very loud . And the Gigabyte one has extra games and stuff in its bundle .

BTW thanx for the quick reply
