391335 2005-09-27 08:20:00 My PC power supply fan has started becoming very loud for no reason lately. I took everything apart and cleaned out as much dust as I could. There was very dark dust all around the power supply, chips and fan.

I don't know if the fan is about to go, or if there could be something else happening. I've been looking up many things about upgrading my computer, and if the power is about to go I've to solve this problem immediately.

I'm not sure if any old power supply I'd buy would even fit in my tower, since the one that's in there seems to barely fit. (120mm fans have been reccomended, but they may not fit, and I don't know what size mine is right now.)

It may be that I'll not be able to get another power supply that works with my current setup. In that case I've prepared for you two examples of replacement parts that I believe will work with the rest of the parts I have.

Any form of help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.
I'm getting a 6600GT 256MB AGP 8x card on Wednesday in the mail, and I don't want this power issure to interfere with my joy :dogeye: (old card is Geforce 4 MX 440). If I can run the computer fine the way it's that'd be good news (though the sound's is annoying as poop).

Also the sound will usually stop when I restart the computer, and then restarts randomly while in use, and makes varying degrees of noise; from so loud and violent I think my PC is going to die, to not much of a hassle really, and it's pretty consistant with whichever noise it decides to make. (In that it doesn't change to another type of noise once it starts)

391336 2005-09-27 08:29:00 Here are some other specifications of my computer, so you can help decide which parts can stay and go if I were to get that new tower; I'm quite certain I'll need the new motherboard, If not for the tower, then for the extra slots in which to place cards and other atatchments. (Does the card support SLI?) Is SLI worth it if I were to get another 6600GT?

Also, my CD and DVD drives have given me trouble in the past, can you reccomend good replacements that don't cost a mint? DVD being able to read and write anything the average user would want, and the best of the average CD drives would be good.

391337 2005-09-27 09:50:00 My power supply packed up a few weeks ago. Replaced it with a Nexus 400watt silent PS. It's super quiet, 120mm fan. PS's all the same size (dimensions) as far as I know. Phil B (648)
391338 2005-09-27 10:01:00 Alright, will this be a good quick fix until I get a tower and mobo?

If anyone has anything to add from my first two posts feel free.

391339 2005-09-27 10:12:00 Try this (http:) place if you want a calculator for power supplies.

Freight would cost an arm & a leg from the US. You could probably get one here cheaper. Unless you got that one for $10

391340 2005-09-27 10:30:00 My PC power supply fan has started becoming very loud for no reason lately. On 'inexpensive' PSU's the fans are notoriously short-lived.

A temporary fix is to lubricate the bearing. I did it with mine (both PSU and case side fan) when they went wonky after only 6 months, and I got an extra 18 months life.

Want more info on how etc? Read more here (www.dansdata.com)

391341 2005-09-27 13:21:00 The most in expensive solution to Ojibwa's problem would just be to simply buy a new fan at an electronics or computer store and replace it. In SA a new fan costs R30 , making it about $4 or $5 US. Not to sure what it would cost in NZ. But should be cost effective Mike_SA (8956)
391342 2005-09-28 01:01:00 Ok, I decided I would try oiling the ballbearings in the fan to see how that goes.

So you can buy new fans and install them into the same old power supply? Something I could probably get at a Radio Shack.

A 120mm fan will work with my old unit if a 80mm fan was in there previously, correct?

Thanks for all the help.

Try placing a square peg in a round hole, unless your fan is external my guess is it wouldnt fit.

Yes or he could just buy a $10 Fan that will probably see him right for a few more years .

4 screw on lid, 4 screws to the fan, may be able to just plug in or may need to chop the 2 wires and Mailbox/Chocolate box the new fan .

noisy fan arn't exactly rare lol
