| 392029 | 2005-09-29 22:46:00 | I know someone who paid just under $10 000 for an Athlon 1800 on an MSI board and a G4MX. Big Byte Palmerston North, Good job that they went under, Theives and low lifes. It went back under Warrenty 3 times to be repaired, Each time they replaced the mothernoard (im sure in these service centres they have a sign over the bench saying its most probally the mobo, replace and return) Anyhow the last time it was returned it wouldn't even boot.....I replaced the cheap PSU and shes been chugging on ever since. As for Compaq, I had a guy walk in the other day, carrying his computer, Set it down and told me proud as punch he had paid $3500 for it, Which was great apart from the fact it was $2000 more then what it was worth. So what did he pay for? (apart from a Sempron 3100) Service? Then what the hell did he have it in my shop for? |

Technology is always going to advance, and anything you buy will always be outdated within months because that's just the way it is! The speed and quality of technological equipment is always going to be increasing at some rate, and there is really no way to avoid purchasing something without it dating. As someone who has been in IT for even a relatively short time, 6 or so years, I have seen technology grow in leaps and bounds. I sold systems 3 or 4 years ago in the $5-10k range per unit, top of the line stuff, and you'd be hard pressed to get even $500 for them now. Even that fancy $4000 PC you could get now for what you think is a bargain, with all of the bells and whistles, will be worth half that in a few months time. Halve it again 6 months later. And you'll be hard pressed to give it away in a few years. pixeldust - gutted that her 8 month old $4000 new laptop is now worth less than $2k. |

| 392031 | 2005-09-29 23:52:00 | About 4 years ago, my family bought a top of the notch Compaq Preasrio Pentium 4 1.4GHz, 40GB Hard Drive, Geforce MX2 Graphics Card (128MB), 128MB Ram, 17" Monitor (CRT), Logisoft Web Camera, HP Scanner and HP Printer + software for NZ$6000. Was it a rip off or what? Compared now, it sucks like hell. Should I get a new PC, or wait for technology to advance a bit more, as it does very fast, I mean only after a year, the price of a similar computer was down to $2500. wooooa you got ripped. I have been in the industry 12 years (so when you purchased that), and I can safely say paying $6000 for that was a HUGE rip off. You should have paid more like $3000 (ish) tops. You can buy a High end PC with a AMD64 processor 2 gig of Ram, 19" LCD 120gig+ HDD really good 6800GT 256MB video card for less than $2500 these days. Of course you can also buy a $800 heap of junk from a retail store also. I honestly believe dektops have basically bottomed out, there is no money in them anymore, and they are not going to get much cheaper. |

Yep you got ripped off. 4 years ago I paid $2500 for: Athlon 1.1Ghz (equiv to about Pentium 4 1.5Ghz+ I think) 128MB SD RAM 20GB hard drive Geforce 2 MX (32MB) 17" CRT Colour Printer. Your video card with 128MB of RAM may have put the price up a bit, I think they were quite rare back then. I think you could buy GeForce 3 Ti 200s which had only 64MB RAM. The Printer and Scanner perhaps put the price up another $1000. |

| 392033 | 2005-09-30 01:24:00 | I realise that the poster's question relates to the current monetary value of the computer, but if the computer is still capable of doing all of the things you bought it for, has a record of being reliable with no breakdowns, and the Ram is able to be updated, then isn't that computer of good value to the person concerned. Remember I'm not talking about monetary value here. OK, gamers will have to keep running to catch up, but average Joe Bloggs like me should still be happy with what they've got. OS is the only bugbear in my life. I'm not knowledgable enough to be able to keep them mean and lean at installation point. My 2-bobs-worth anyway. |
