392057 2005-09-29 10:20:00 Excuse me if my question is stupid. My last proper graphic card was a TNT 32Mb

Anyway, at the moment, my computer is on onboard graphics, Intel 82915G Express chipset to be precise. Every now and then, when I try to close a screen, jump from one thing to next, etc. I'd get a frozen screen (somethings just freeze, sometimes goes completely white) for a few seconds to just under half a minute.

Just wondering if this may be because the graphic processor is lacking in performance? I have P4 3Ghz, with 512Mb DDR400, so I don't think it could be any other problem.

I am looking at buying GECUBE RADEON X600XT PCIe 128MB/VIVO Xtreme Edition (www.gecube.com) Anyone got comments? -I don't do gaming, etc. Just thought if I was to get a graphic card, I may as well get a decent one. Price ain't a problem because I can source the one above for cheap. (My motherboard only supports PCI-E, not AGP)

Cheers,

392058 2005-09-29 10:40:00 I really doubt its your graphics card in this case. I reccomend you spend your money on a memory, CPU or hd upgrade. These will more likely address the performance issue you have.

If your CPU is reasonably modern then go for a mem upgrade.

392059 2005-09-29 11:22:00 Memory is not a problem either though. I'm usually using just under half of my full capacity (512Mb) -usually got over 256mb to spare.

Thanks,

392060 2005-09-29 11:41:00 I certainly wouldn't assume it is a graphics 'card' problem. No way will it take up to 30 sec to 'catch up'. Has it always done this? Is the system frozen e.g. can you get responses from your mouse? Is there any disk activity during the pauses? Is there any Internet traffic?

I would look at the system and application logs to see if any errors are reported. Good idea to do this periodically, anyway. It would be a good idea to run spyware checks, also, as it seems as if your system is being flogged on some activity. Can you get into Task Manager during a pause?

Thanks for your reply, I wouldn't say 30 seconds all the time. It can vary anywhere from 5 to 30s. The system still moves, etc. Task Manager pops up as well, but the whole screen juz freezes, and then when it comes back, Task Manager is displayed, mouse moves again, etc. Spyware, etc. has been checked, and no problems found

It has done this for quite some time, even after fresh install, but now that I'm back earning some money, it feels more irritating and I can't resist not spending it ;)

392062 2005-09-29 11:56:00 Have you updated your motherboard graphics drivers and all your other drivers?

Do the most recommended and cheapest upgrade get more memory as that will help out alot for opening/closing programmes .

Add 512mb ddr400 and it will make a big difference .

392063 2005-09-29 12:42:00 Do a disk clean and a disk defragmentation as that helps too.

I have a rather good habit of putting my PC on defrag once every few days, not too often I suppose. Will more ram help? -even when I don't think it's needed?

392065 2005-09-29 21:35:00 I would check...
drivers - have you got the latest (not from Microsoft Updates either)
bios - how much memory ids allocated to the onboard graphics
bios - is onboard grapics the default, or is it looking to AGP first (not sure if this one will affect it, but just check the setting)

Whether you game or not 1GB of RAM is becoming comman place today . I think RAM is a good option . Most recommend 512MB of RAM ro RUN Windows smoothly . Now if your running onboard graphics Windows is actually not getting the full 512MB .

Bottom line is You need to get more RAM . It is the cheaper option and also if you don't play games why bother to fork out a few hundy for a X600 when you can fork out just under $100 for another 512MB stick of RAM .

cheers
