391815 2005-09-28 10:12:00 Ok I recently formatted my hard drive and had to clean install everything. I have now decided that a decent back-up solution is needed.

What I was thinking of getting was...

1) External hard drive enclosure (USB 2.0 or Firewire)
2) 160 - 200GB hard drive
3) Some sort of back-up software

Ok now I'm no expert at this so I would just like some opinions on what the best way to go is.

I'm thinking of doing maybe an incremental back-up once a week and then a full back up once a month. I will only be backing up my main hard drive as the 2nd one is used primarily for storage of apps and music etc.

I intend to partition the back-up hard drive into 5 partitions, basically 1 for each weekly back-up and 1 for the big monthly back-up. Basically each partition will be over-written every 4 weeks or so.

I don't want to use any sort of optical disc back-up solution.

Well that's about it, I don't think I left anything out.

Please feel free to make any sort of suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

cheers

391816 2005-09-28 11:40:00 Acronis True Image. Downloaded last week and very happy. Will do what you want and not that costly. berryb (99)
391817 2005-09-28 19:08:00 Acronis does have both an imaging part and an incremental backup feature. But I found its imaging part very slow compared to Ghost or Drive Image. pctek (84)

Ghost is now Drive Image since Symantec brought it. I use Ghost for doing complete partition backups (full only) and do them once a week.
I also use Novaback 7.2 for just doing files as required on partitions that I dont need the whole lot backed up but just bits of it need doing. Novaback also has a disaster recovery mode.

Sorry I'm not going anywhere near bloody GHOST again, it's the very program that stuffed my system up and that's why I had to clean install.

391820 2005-09-29 01:21:00 If you are after a data backup rather than a system backup maybe you could use an Iomega External drive - it comes with data sync'ing and versioning software - you just choose the source folders and it keeps up to date backups and as many versions as you want.. (or you could use robocopy to do this yourself on the cheap) :2cents: leechfish (8970)
391821 2005-09-29 01:48:00 Some time ago I purchased an external hard drive complete in its own little container with USB connection . Using Acronis I made a complete image of my HD some 57Gb of it. I had a windows crash and was able to restore everything without any hassle so would recommend this system. heaton (3697)

Really? I've been using it since about V4 and now have v2003 (and that will be the last one as I am aware of their new one being DI). What happended exactly?

391824 2005-09-29 02:54:00 There's nothing wrong with Ghost as long as you run it from a boot floppy or boot CD.
You had all those problems because you were running it from within Windows.

It's about the best cloning and/or imaging program I've tried.
