BTW I have tried disabling internal and external cache in the bios settings to no avail.

392558 2005-10-02 19:30:00 Just on a hunch, try disabling your USB host in BIOS and, if you have a USB add in card, pull it, and see what happens. Murray P (44)

No I didn't. I have tried reinstalling XP several times. I have also tried a couple of linux live distros all of which hung.

I tried another CPU but no change. I must conclude that it is a mainboard issue, luckily the guy I bought the gear from is happy to offer a full refund.
