2005-10-01 12:34:00 | I have recently built a Shuttle SN45G nForce2 chipset. All works well except that the CD drive is not visable in Windows. I can see it in BIOS and DOS, I have used it to reinstall WinXP. I have tried several IDE cables and 2 different drives. I have tried all combinations of master, slave, and cable select on both primary and secondary IDE sockects. I have installed the mainboard drivers. At one point I did get the CD drive in Windows, but the drive was empty when double clicked. Both CD drives work OK in an external USB box. Please save the last of my hair.

2005-10-01 22:17:00 | Try this fix www.dougknox.com It replaces the upper & lower filter entries in the registry which can become corrupted Download XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip and save this file to your hard drive. Navigate to where you saved it and double click the file to extract the contents. Locate the EXE file you extracted and double click it. A confirmation dialog will appear when the script is done. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect. If that doesn't work check device manager for any hardware entries with exclaimation marks, delete the entries and let windows redetect them

2005-10-02 03:56:00 | Thanks for that, no good though. Nothing relating the the cd rom appeared in devce manager. However, I have now upgraded this system the XP SP2 and reloaded the mainboard drivers. Now I can see the cd icon in windows. But the system freezes when I try to access is. If there is a cd in the drive during startup it hangs. If I go into safe mode with a cd in the drive it hangs at mup.sys.

2005-10-02 04:16:00 | I had this problem as well it turned out not to be the mup . sys file that was the problem . . . it actually loaded and it was the last file in the series . . . What actually fixed my problem was a registry entry that tells XP to look for another keyboard . . . I changed the 1 to a 0 and Voila`! . . . booted right up . . .

2005-10-02 04:25:00 | sorry...I clicked the SUBMIT by mistake: to go on: This can be caused by a known problem in Service Pack 2 for WinXP and Intel Prescott processors cquirke.mvps.org I found this tool and ran it: downloadfinder.intel.com 31.msi&ProductID=441 and it found the following: Level 2 cache 1MB CPU Revision 0 I was unable to get a bios update for my motherboard so instead I made a fresh install of WinXP and copied the update.sys file to c:\ and renamed it update.bak I then installed SP2 for XP and as usual the system couldn't boot back into windows. Then I went into the recovery console using the XP CD and copied the update.bak file I created back into its original location (c:\windows\system32\drivers) ............deleted the update.sys that was there ............renamed update.bak to update.sys ............rebooted Its all running again but I am concerned that making this change may affect future updates of the OS but I'm continuing to harrass tech support to provide a bios update to fix the problem. Essentially the problem stems from the Level 2 cache only being 1MB and this being incompatible for SP2's network security functions. Disabling the Level 2 cache apparently works as well although your PC will be so slow you'll end up throwing it out the window.

2005-10-02 06:53:00 | hmmmm thanks Jie, There's an Athlon XP-M 2600+ in this box that I bought with it . Apparantly this combo had been woring OK before, but I don't know what OS had been running in it before . Interesting that this could be an issue with CPU cache because I read elsewhere that a similar problem was caused by a faulty processor . . . . . will have another fiddle later tonight .

2005-10-02 10:45:00 | OK, I can now see the cd drive, but eh system freeezes when I insert a cd. If a cd is in the drive when I boot the system freezes. | Standing_Amazed (7841) | |
2005-10-02 15:21:00 | The Shuttle SN45G is AMD based and is not affected by the SP2 issue described above How strange . . . I was worried too about that issue when the Soyo Dragon Ultra Platinum/AMD XP I just repaired got "cured" this way, that's why I had that info . I too recognized the cross-platform problem, but my son brought this to my attention, and it worked here for me . . . . or it might have been a fluke . I just wonder if the cache is the trouble all along . Now, you've got me off on another tangent to try to find WHY it worked for me even though I was fixing an AMD here . Ah well, the learning curve gets more obtuse every day . Will post results (if I ever find out why) later . . . . . . . going fishing for the next 24 hours . . . .
