2005-10-01 03:25:00 | Ok the missus & I have done our annual Spring clean of the flat. I have been "asked" to move the computer which sits in the living room next to the TV to the spare bedroom. Now the nearest phone jack is at the TV which is bout 10 - 15m away from the new location in the spare bedroom. The missus wants "no bloody wires" hanging around so I'm stuck having to get wireless. My budget's about $210 but I want to spend as little as possible, but want at least 54Mbps. If I can get a 108Mbps setup for the same amount of cash or maybe a little more then that would be good. I have sussed out some equipment from DSE (I know not exactly the best but get 10% off as a VIP Club member. I will be connecting the Access point to my Excel 10/100Mbps ADSL modem/router. Here's what I have thought about getting... Access Point (www.dse.co.nz) I'm not sure which one these cards to get, there's only a $1 difference but just give me some direction as to which one I should get. Network Card 1 (www.dse.co.nz) Network Card 2 (www.dse.co.nz) cheers chiefnz

2005-10-01 07:39:00 | What about USB wireless?? I managed to get 2 USB 2 54 mbps plugin WLANS for $39 inc GST, just up the road here, in Mt Eden . The good thing about them is the software u install for them, also lets u use them as an access point . Saves you getting a separate access point . I would have purchased PCI cards, but you wont get much of a signal with the aerial behind the case . The USB WLANS, came with a cable, so at least they're not behind the case, so you'll get a better signal .

Yes that sounds good but if I don't have an access point I won't have my modem hooked up to the computer . I need to have an Access Point to connect my modem so that I can get on the Internet or am I missing something here . cheers chiefnz |

2005-10-01 18:22:00 | These USB WLANS with the software you install for them, let you configure them either as a station, or an access point . It doesnt need or use XP's wireless networking program . It uses its own . If one is configured as a access point, you also have the option of entering MAC addresses of which WLAN's you want to give access to the access point . The drivers for these also act as firmware . They're similar to the top pic in the 3rd pic here (The pic with 2 USB WLANS in it) . . zydas . com . tw/product/ZD1211 . asp" target="_blank">www . zydas . com . tw And with the latest version of the drivers, you also get WPA 2 and WPA 2 PSK, (and a few more options), which aren't in the drivers on the cd that comes with them .

2005-10-01 18:52:00 | I need to give wireless capability to my WIRED ADSL MODEM. Now I hear what you're saying bout configuring it as an access point but are you saying I can connect the usb adapter straight to my modem? cheers chiefnz

2005-10-01 19:34:00 | Can't see why not . It'll be exactly the same as using onboard LAN, / a wired network, except it'll be wireless . Like, all I did was (I use ICS on the main PC) . Installed the drivers for both WLAN USB, configured them, gave both ip addresses (different to the onboard LAN), then pointed my WLAN USB to 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 (the info u put in, is exactly the same as if it were an onboard NIC) . Waited for both to acquire their ips . That was it . Disabled onboard LAN . Pulled the wires . Voila the wireless was working . The program/drivers you install give u a signal strength indicator and a link quality indicator . There wouldn't be any difference whether wired or wireless . If your adsl modem is configured to allow the other PC on the net / share files now . All you have to do with these is configure them exactly the same way (but with different ip addresses, and point the networked PC to the same ip address your networked PC is using now, to access the net . (Thru your main computer) . Altho, this may also depend on how far apart your computers are from each other . I'm not too sure on what the range is, for these WLANS . It may 100 to 300 m or something . I can also share files (which isnt too bad, its still pretty fast), and I can also print wirelessly from the main PC (Thru a USB printer attached to this computer) . It works fine .

2005-10-01 21:53:00 | I only have 1 computer which I use. This PC is currently connected to an ADSL Modem/Router via a crossover cable. Now as far as I am aware I will need to hook the modem/router up to a wireless access point so that the I can get onto the Internet via the PC's wireless connection. So having said that will I be able to connect the USB adapter directly to the modem and have a wireless netowrk like that? I just want this point clarifies before I do any shopping. cheers chiefnz

2005-10-01 23:59:00 | I know what you mean now . It sounds like you want to: Be free of wires from the PC (in the bedroom), to the phone jack . BUT then, this maybe tricky, because . BOTH the access point and router would, or may have to be connected to the PC, so both can be configured first . So there are no wires in between . And then the access point which may have to be at the phone jack end, would have to have a phone connection on it and run by mains power . Do any wireless access points have phone connections on the back of them? So, it could log in for you from the bedroom, with a normal USB or PCI wireless card (not one that acts as an access point) .
