392466 2005-10-01 02:50:00 Problem with NEC Versa laptop, was in use when things started slowing down, not sure if laptop was then turned off or switched off..
Now when tring to restart the laptop give's you the options of starting in safe mode, normal mode and something else. I haven't actually seen it so I'm not sure, anyway it just ends up doing nothing..
The recovery NEC disc has been tried with no luck keeps asking for another disc which was never supplied( is it talking about a boot disk) Would trying to use a free standing copy of xp work, as I have access to one..
Not worried about losing info as the computer was routinely backed up..
Any ideas, suggestions are welcome,,the old man is pulling his hair and has resorted to use the old ladies mac

392467 2005-10-01 06:41:00 Go to: start, programs, accessories, system tools, scandisk; click and, run...
"Scandisk thorough"
or, go to: start, programs, msdos prompt, and, run scandisk within msdos:if you can not access it by restart then: restart when it's finished; that should do it.
otherwise; you may have to try a boot disk or, reload your os...

392468 2005-10-01 06:55:00 boot into safe mode, start>run> tupe "msconfig" and press enter.

Select the startup tab and untick every single items, then click on the services tab and select "all non MS services", untick whatever is displayed. Reboot and see if you get back to a working desktop.

Or just try using system restore while in safe mode to roll it back to an earlier date.

If it's XP (doesn't say) there is no Scandisk, it's chkdsk from the Run box or Command line with whatever switches you want to use
or right click the drive concerned, go properties > tools > Check Now and select which option you want

If you can't get into safe mode
I'd try booting from the XP CD
You don't say which model you have, so just make sure it has enough resources to handle XP otherwise grab a 98SE CD and boot from that

392470 2005-10-02 04:18:00 It;s XP with SP2 on it,we have tried the suggestions, but no luck, as it was all backedup we also tried a fresh install, but this hasn't worked either..
The old man is currently having a play with mandrake, but I'm pretty sure his patience will be running out shortly, can't find a driver for his DSE 802.g card.
Original problem was that we couldn't even start in safe mode to run these tests

392471 2005-10-02 05:15:00 Failure to install indicates a hardware fault, If it were me I would hit it with killdisc, then try once again to install, (you willl need the cd's and to set it to boot from cd drive).

If it still fails to install it would be time for repair...

Any idea on what hardware?
If it's the HD no problem, cheap enough to replace, anything else and it's a doorstop..

392474 2005-10-02 06:57:00 Not enough info to give a realistic indication of the fault if it is hardware.

Did it run the Linux install properly?

Your next step would be to hit it with Memtest86 and an harddrive diagnostic tool.

Neaither are 100% certain but may show up the fault.

392475 2005-10-02 18:03:00 try this, safe boot,... select vga mode. If that works chances are you a have a faulty video card/driver.
Vga mode uses the microsoft driver it will horrible as far resolution is concerned but it may point to the problem.
