393232 2005-10-04 00:58:00 Hi there

Running XP on a PIII 450 with 256M RAM

I keep getting the following Power Surge warning

A USB device has malfunctioned and exceeded the power limits of its hub port. You should disconnect the device.

The location of the device is shown in bold type

USB Root Hub (2 ports)
- ? Unknown USB Device
- ? Unknown USB Device

Recommendation - To reenable the port disconnect the hardware and click reset

(I have 2x USB 1 ports on the back of the computer) - I have nothing plugged into them and therefore the suggestion that I disconnect any device is somewhat unhelpful. I have let XP search the internet but it says there is no better driver for either the USB hub or the PCI to USB Universal Host controller.

Any ideas on where to go from here?

Thanks

393233 2005-10-04 02:41:00 Its more likely to be that your specific motherboard needs better USB drivers for XP (as it was manufactured long befor XP was released). Its using the default Windows ones.

Windows itself will not be able to find them, but visiting the motherboard makers site may help

Otherwise just turn off the warning.

To disable the warning, Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device manager, select the the specific USB Controller (expand the [+]), then Properties, Advanced, tick "Don't Tell Me About USB Errors."
