393041 2005-10-03 04:48:00 Hi all

I have an older computer PIII 500 which has a Conexant HSF 56k softmodem.

I have just upgraded to XP (went well!) except for the fact that XP doesn't seem to locate the modem (so I'm doing this through a snail pace ye olde external modem).

I checked the conexant site and it suggests that XP CD should have the correct drivers but I think the problem id that it isn't actually seeing the modem - When I check the control panel/hardware/systems/device manager I can see the PCI Simple Communications Controller listed (but with the big question mark!) and therefore not enabled. But I suspect until I get that sorted the actual modem part won't be seen (I seem to recall that under W98SE it ran some sort of enumerator first.

Any ideas on what to try next?

Thanks for your help :)

393042 2005-10-03 04:52:00 In my experience you will need the actual modem manufacturers drivers for XP, as each maker implements the Conexant chipset in their own manner, not all will or can use a generic driver.

If the particular implementation is unable to be used under XP, then another modem is required that is supported.

Been there, done that.

The old ones make a satisfying "clunk" when you toss them in the wastepaper bin though.

393044 2005-10-03 21:43:00 FYI a new hardware modem is only about $15 to $25 dollars depending on brand. Hardware modem should alos increase your internet speed and performance. Odin (227)

393046 2005-10-04 22:29:00 It has been a couple of months since I last looked at the rpice of modems and they do appear to have gone up a bit since then. The last time I looked at this modem it was $18.00 and I have the reciept to prove it ;-) I bought it for a friend sometime aroune June or July Still $29 aint that bad.

393047 2005-10-04 22:42:00 Your referring to an internal pci modem?

The ones described as Controller-less hardware modems?

They aren't a real hardware modem, they lack all of the abilities of an external unit and don't work any better then your usual soft modem.Hell, I've seen them perform worse, so badly I replaced them with a Soft modem.

393048 2005-10-04 22:50:00 The modems you link to above are not true hardware modems .

Note they are advertised as "controllerless" meaning they have no on-board CPU as a true hardware modem does, such as a serial RS232 external modem . They are still a Winmodem, and I would avoid them if I had the choice .

They have a limited on-board hardware support but still rely on the main PC CPU for operation .

393050 2005-10-04 22:59:00 I actually found that the PCI hardware modems worked better than my external one, admittedly it wasn't a cheepy Pragmatic PCI and used the Lucent chipset but it far outerformed my External. Back before ADSl became the common thing i used to get a 95 Ping on Counter Strike but when I moved up to ADSL my ping went up to 150. Odin (227)
