392755 2005-10-18 02:33:00 Ah ok. So, did Xoftspy remove the nasty entries?? Speedy Gonzales (78)
392756 2005-10-18 13:42:00 The first time I used it it found about 8 items including that search bar. It never got rid of the search bar but everything else was easy.

It says that it cleaned it but it appears again the next time I scan. Still have yet to try in safe mode with system restore off again.

392757 2005-10-18 23:02:00 Magic!

Was searching around the web and came across a couple of programs. After installing Spy Sweeper I updated it and turned off system restore, then in safe mode I ran the scan twice and after the second time the toolbar was gone. So far as I know the struggle is over :D

If though I'm correct, new issues are just over the horizon....

So you will be using Firefox from now on then :D

392759 2005-10-19 14:30:00 I've been using Firefox for over a year at least . The thing is I'm not the only one using this computer . My brother doesn't seem to care much about safety so I'm having to every once in a while get rid of a whole load of spyware after he installs these odd programs he comes across (reinstalled Bearshare recently :( )

I use Avant browser whenever I need to get things like windows updates .

Aside from that I've a new issue (actually not really new, just as far as you know) where I can't figure out where 29Gb on my 111Gb harddrive have gone .

I uninstalled Half-life 2 today because Counter Strike Source wasn't starting right (turning off and back to the desktop the moment the first loading page comes up), but the game is still working fine on my brothers account (noone else's) even though I've uninstalled it :annoyed:

Not working for me of course because It's not installed (for me) . I guess it would help if I told you that my brother has become very secretive about anything he does (no matter what it is) when it comes to what he considers his possesions (such as his login on this computer) . I don't really care about being able to access his account except when it comes to maintenance and figuring out where all the data has gone .

When we first got this PC he made his account unable to be looked into by anyone else (including others with admin privilages), which I found really stupid since noone else cares about what he does (so long as he's not downloading all sorts of virus/spy/addware infested crap) .

I've no Idea if there is a virus or two swimming around in his files, or if the scans I run have any effect on those files which I'm unable to reach .

I'm not sure if there is something illegal about this so if there is just tell me, but I'm now looking for a program that may allow me to see what files are associated with his account . I've full admin access but don't know how to find out exactly what space my brother's account is using . (can't get into his account nor see the files [his password being unknown to me])

If I'm going to get into his account by asking him, it's going to create a fight, I'd rather know there is something to fight about than end up seeming like an idiot when I finally get access to his account, and then can't find a thing (the reason I ask here) .

Any comments or suggestions appreciated (and so what? when I install Half-life 2/CounterStrike Source I'm essentialy installing it twice because when he makes his files unable to be viewed the files must both exist seperate in his account as one copy, and then as a seperate copy for everyone else, taking up 2x as much room?) :badpc:

Aside from the missing 29 Gb, he's already got the majority of the data tied up with one game (FFXI) and his movies/mp3's . As you might be able to tell it's frustrating to maintain the health of the PC when a person is unwilling to allow access to his files .

392760 2005-10-19 20:16:00 Well, if your bro has his own PC, password protect yours, then he wont get in or on it . Easy as that .

And password protect your login . If he hasnt got his own PC, tell him to get one . I would, if my bro kept screwing things up .

If he doesnt want to listen, too bad for him . Don't let him on it .

Try getting rid of the temp files etc on the hdd . Or use something, like ccleaner to do it .

It may bring back some of the space .

We share this PC, not until I buy this off my parents will it be mine . The problem is that he has his own account that I cannot (nor anyone else) access, except for him because he knows the password . Every account has a password on this computer for safety (half the job is done for hackers if there is no password needed) .

So he has just as much right as me atm to use this PC (essentially no chance in hell of him not using it) .

I'm pretty sure that I've gotten rid of all of the temp files numerous times, and I use CCleaner regularly .

I reinstalled Half-Life 2 . . . seems as though there was perhaps two copies of it installed, now there is about 9Gb of free space . One copy was running from Program Files/Steam, and the other Program Files/Valve/Steam . . . . Very weird but good that I cleared some space . Now there's only about 20Gb missing . . . .

Edit: Oh yeah, is it possible that because we can't see what's inside of his account that scanners also won't pick this up? I'm using various scans to detect how much data is being used and in what directories (Treesize, and a tool within Ace Utilities) .
