392793 2005-10-02 04:34:00 Specs:
Motherboard: MSI K7N2G to a GigaByte GA-81915P
CPU: Athlon to a Pentium 4
Hard Drives: 2x Ata Drives (master 40GB, slave 80GB) Connected via IDE Ports
CD-RW and DVD-ROM - Generic (drivers should be in windows) Connected via IDE Ports
Graphics Card (the previous graphics card was on board but i had to buy a seperate card this time)
OS: Windows XP Pro

I'm having troubles getting my computer up and running again after installing a new motherboard and was wondering if anyone could help me out.

I was orginally using a MSI motherboard with an Athlon CPU, but it fried itself so i changed to a Gigabyte GA-81915P motherboard with a pentium 4 cpu and Graphics card. It's still registering that the motherboard is MSI and Athlon, and i have lost my drivers so i can't reload on windows. It still reads the hard drives and sometimes i can get windows to load up, but most of the time i get an error (which changes each time) and starts to dump the memory.
I followed the instructions in the booklet, but the bios will only recognise the hardrives as being installed, and though it sees that there is a CD-RW and DVD-ROM, and that there is a bootable disc inside, it doesn't show up in th bios or in windows (but it recognises Floppy). I've tried exchanging the IDE connections, and when the CD-ROM is connected to IDE1, it will run the boot disk, but it won't recognise the hard drive. Does this mean that the motherbaord is faulty as it will not recognise anything that is plugged into IDE2 and IDE3.

I was also told that i would require a new hard drive as i have changed the brand of motherboard. Will i need to do this? Or will the computer run fine if i get the drivers working and reload Windows XP?

Hopefully someone can help me with this/

392794 2005-10-02 05:01:00 First you need to give, in detail, the error messages you are getting.

At a guess, you really need to get hold of the correct motherboard/chipset drivers, otherwise your pushing the proverbial up hill with a stick. Especially considering you've gone from AMD to Intel chips, it's surprising Windows even looks like it will load.

392795 2005-10-02 05:43:00 you CANNOT expect winxp to load yoru operating system after you change the motherboard but leave the existing harddrive in there...........you MIGHT get lucky but most of the time you'll need to do a repair install because of all the different hardware and consequently the 'old' windows installlation you have WONT have the correct drivers so it's gonna throw a wobbly ...........try loading eh drivers in safe mode if you can get there otherwise it'll be a repair install....... drcspy (146)
392796 2005-10-02 05:44:00 and whoever told you you'll need a new harddrive doestn' know what the hell they're talkin about............you dont need a new drive just get those drivers loaded............ drcspy (146)
392797 2005-10-02 05:49:00 The best thing to do is do a fresh clean install of WIndows again. Back up your data then format and start again.
You need the drivers for your motherboard and other components but you download them all if you don't have the CDs for some reason.

XP is not as forgiving of updating itself as the older versions were. In fact sometimes even the old versions would have a hissy if you tried it...

392798 2005-10-02 06:13:00 well considering that reloading the drivers may be all that's needed or failing that a repair install why would you want to wipe the system then have to reinstall all your programs and data etc ?.........surely the simplest fix is the first one to try ? drcspy (146)
392799 2005-10-02 06:15:00 The main error message i get is PFN_LIST_CORRUPTED, and IRQL_NOT_EQUAL_TO.
I tried to download the drivers but the drivers are a part of XP, and i have to update windows to get them, but it won't let me do that. i can get the CD-ROM to go if i plug it into IDE1, but then i have to lose my hard-drive as the other IDE ports will not recognise it, so i can't reinstall windows as there is no hard drive to install it on.
I didn't expect windows to run properly since i've changed the motherbaord, but i was told by the computer techs that i just had to load on the disks that came with the motherboard, and maybe repair windows with the XP disk, but with the CD-ROM down, i couldn't do that myself.
Would reformating the hard-drive help at all if i can't get the CD-ROM and Hard-Drive working at the same time?

392800 2005-10-02 06:49:00 that's prettyodd have you tried changing the jumper settings on the cdrom to c/s, (cable select) or any of the other choices, (master,slave) ? . . . . . . . is it recognised in bios ? . . . . . . . . have you tried changin the harddrive jumpers ? . . . . . . . .

I tried to download the drivers but the drivers are a part of XP, and i have to update windows to get them

nope the drivers are not part of xp they are used by xp[b] and supplied by the [b]hardware manufacturers what the techs told you is correct and it should be working I suspect you have a jumper issue with the harddrive/cdrom ?

392801 2005-10-02 09:08:00 The bios will recognise whatever is plugged into IDE1, but will not recognise anything that is plugged into IDE2/3. I've also tried changing the master slave, and booting from the slave drive and seeing if i could reload windows onto the slave instead, but it keeps coming up with an error message saying that there is a windows file that is either corrupted or missing so can not load windows on, even though i haven't got the boot disk in. I've never loaded windows onto the slave drive before so i don't know where its trying to pull the files from :waughh: I've tried everything out, plugging and replugging the cords, jumpers, master/slave, changing the specs in the bios, but it still will not register anything on the other IDE ports. The only IDE port that is working is IDE1.

The drivers i'm having problems with is the CD-RW and DVD-ROM. I've typed in the model numbers and they come up as 'default window drivers', but they will go if i plug them in to IDE1 so i'm beginning to think that it might not be my drivers that is causing the problems, but the motherboard itself.

392802 2005-10-04 08:35:00 It turns out that you can only have the CD-ROM pluged into IDE1, and to get the other IDE channels working you have to place the CD-ROM as master, and your main HDD as slave on the same cable. Then you can load on the motherboard drivers to get the other ports working. It would of been nice if they had written that in the instructions... :illogical zky (8997)
