394130 2005-10-07 05:17:00 Hi,

I've just scored two devices that convert fibre optical cable to ethernet. ( McBasic from Imc Networks (www.imcnetworks.com))
And I was woundering where I could get some fibre cable for these little things. I'm not too sure what connectors etc, so If someone could help me out there, that would not go a miss.

394131 2005-10-07 05:44:00 I'd say an electrical wholesaler will have it.

Also, be aware that the fibre-optic cable ends can only be terminated by a professional installer who has the proper tools to do it - it's not a DIY-able job.

394133 2005-10-08 00:57:00 There arer a number of different connectors used. Patch cables, with the connectors attached are available, but I suspect they are not cheap "at the shop". I think I saw some on Trademe a few days ago with various connectors, but the pictures are not very clear (Trademe is a great showcase for just how bad digital photography can be in the hands of the incompetent), and I have an idea that the vendor doesn't really know anything. Unless you are planning to do longer than a 100 metre connection I don't see the point in even bothing to play with media converters. It wont make your copper ethernet run any quicker.....

It's interesting and fun to play with different technologies.

Nothing quite like a fresh weekend project to kill some time and grow your knowledge :)

Exactly ! I'm not interested in making the network go faster, It's something new, and it seems I have an interest in networking, and I've allways wanted something that uses fibre optic in the network ;)

I guess I'm just turning into an old grump. I see a number of those media converters produced by Big Mac corp (or whatever it's called) support QoS and bandwidth limiting so I guess some fun might be had with one ..

394139 2005-10-10 01:37:00 Here's what I found with a search on "fibre optic (www.trademe.co.nz/structure/listings/listings_search_results.asp?searchtype=GENERAL&searchstring=fibre+optic&searchregion=100&mcat=0002-0358-&go.x=7&go.y=9)" in the Computers/Networking & Modems area on Trademe today.

Just look carefully at the connectors. ;)
